Having just dragged myself kicking and screaming into the digital music age by purchasing an iPod touch I would now like to connect this up to my car stereo. As the stereo is one with a tape player and no CD (so not modern!) I'm looking for a new head unit.

The car is a BMW z3 so e36 fitment, I had a look in Halfords on Sunday and was left a bit confused with whether I want a usb/ bluetooth etc etc so thought I would put it out here to see if anyone had any recommendations for a cost effective < £100 unit.

I'm sure that there are loads of other things that I should take into consideration, however the last car stereo I bought was in about 2000..

The easy/cheap option is one of those headphone jack to tape adaptors everyone used with their portable CD players in the '90s.

If you're going for a new headunit, I prefer to plug my iPhone in, rather than rely on bluetooth streaming - the sound is better, the iPhone gets charged up and depending on the head unit, you can see all the music on your device. With Bluetooth you tend to just have the play/pause/skip options.

Yes going for a new head unit.

So am I basically just looking for a USB enabled unit or something iPod enabled?

Any suggestions?

Cheers

go for something ipod enabled. that way you can use the head unit controls instead of faffing with the ipod itself. i got the pure h260dbi from halfords, and that does everything - dab , bluetooth, aux in, ipod controlling, usb , cd player as well. cost 160 quid fitted ( including the DAB aerial)

iPod enabled!

USB enabled will just allow you to play music off a USB stick.

Does it do SD cards?
