Have had my old Go Pro for a few years now and although it still works, I quite fancy a new one. Especially one with the LCD screen and/or WiFi, remote control etc. The only problem is the price, as I just don't use them enough to spend 2 or 3 hundred pounds. So, I just wondered if the cheaper copies were worth a punt? I have no doubt that they won't be anything like as good as the genuine article, but for an occasional bit of car footage, are they worth a punt?

As we are off to Wales next weekend, I blew the princely sum of fifteen quid on this one, so I guess I'll know soon enough.

Has anyone else tried one?

For £15 you won't get anywhere near, but there are tons of cameras out there that are up there with the GoPro for a lot less money. Have a look on Techmoan.com.

Biggest problem tends to be finding one that isn't a copy, cloning well reviewed GoPro alternatives with cameras that look the same but have crappy internals is big business.

The only go-go Clone I considered was the SJCAM one, been very impressed with the sj5000 wifi, think it was £70.

I have bought cheap keyfob cameras claimed to be HD and found the quality to be shocking.

Technmoan is the place to look. I think the gitup git 1 is the current darling of the budget go-pro copies. I have an sj4000 which is fine but the battery life became very poor, very quickly, which is probably just down to cheap batteries.

My Qumox from Amazon is at least as good as my son's Hero2 of similar vintage +/- 12 months

Thanks. Just bought one and thought I might do a little side by side comparison with my cheapo one.

To be honest, I don't think the GoPro's are actually anything particularly special any more and I'm not wow'd by their quality either.

I've got a cheap £50 Mobius cam which I've used a lot in the past and in terms of image quality it's easily up there with the Hero 3+ I've got. When I had a problem with the GoPro their support team tried to tell me it wasn't an issue because the example videos on my YouTube channel were of the quality they'd expect from the GoPro. Yep, they'd viewed the wrong videos and they were actually from the Mobius.

My son's Hero2 froze and wouldn't start, charge, or anything - a brick! Google searches said put it in the freezer for a few hours and start it while cold, update the firmware and it'll be fine. To my amazement it was!

I've never been a fan of the gopro form factor, so I've also tried a innov c3, which I thought was great, but broke after a year. Since then moved onto a drift stealth which is a bit less sticky-outy. It's more expensive but after going through 2 cheap ones I thought it was time to try an expensive one. As I said above the SJs do seem decent, apart from the batteries, but you can easily get spares on ebay.

I bought 2 spares and an external charger, I think it was about £12 or so..

I am even quite impressed by still quality of it once you work out how to make use of the semi-fisheye effect

Well first to arrive was the 15 quid eBay special and I am actually very surprised at the quality, as it doesn't seem too bad. Obviously the real test is the actual video quality itself, but it certainly works and does what it should. The free app' also appears to work very well with my iPhone. An added bonus is all the extra mounts and cases they include. I was so pleasantly surprised I blew another £6 on some spare batteries! smile I have tomorrow afternoon off, so will see how well it records? (assuming the SD cards arrive)
