Got my iPhone 7 delivered on Wednesday and collected my Golf R today (I know, tough week huh? to top it all I've also won letter of the month in evo!)

Anyway, I've no previous experience of Carplay but it seems like it should be easy to set up.
Except it isn't. I can connect the phone to the car via bluetooth, but it won't link for Carplay.

The car media system says the phone isn't set up for Carplay, which is odd, because Apple say it is.

However, when I go to the settings (and numerous google searches say I should go General > Settings > Carplay) there's no Carplay.

There is on my work iPhone 6, but not on the 7.

Anyone know what's going on? How do I turn on Carplay on the iPhone? Presumably that would solve the compatibility issue with the car?

We have a Corsa with carplay, doesn't connect via bluetooth but as soon as you connect the iPhone by USB Carplay starts, no more set up than that required.

With my iPhone 7 I didn't have to change settings at all, just plugged in and worked.

I've tried the cable and it suggests my device isn't set up for carplay or to try another USB port.
There isn't one.

Is your iPhone unlocked when you plug it in? I seem to think it has to be unlocked.
Have you had a look through the Golf's menus? Carplay could be turned off in the car, wouldn't know where to look though I'm afraid.

Did you spec car play with the car? All golfs have the software built in but it's not activated unless you pay for it (either factory order or dealer retrofit)

CarPlay has been working fine on my iPhone 7, didn't need to switch anything on.

Well, after further investigation it was the phone, not the car.
"Carplay" wasn't even listed in the settings, so a reboot was required. Once that was done the car connected with the phone straight away (via the cable) overriding the bluetooth.

CarPlay is interesting, unfortunate that the two apps I use (Waze and TomTom speed cameras) don't work on the big screen so the phone still has to be on the dash. No biggie though.

I also use Waze so haven't investigated car play much. What actually happens in that case? Can the phone just stay on Waze but you can adjust music and make calls from the car play display, or does Waze disappear as soon as you make a call or start doing anything on the car play display?

If you don't get an answer I can test this with a different navigation app tomorrow.

The iPhone display moves to whatever is being shown on the CarPlay unit, and doesn't go back to previous navigation apps.

Yes, you're faced with the (bright) app display on the head unit and Waze or TomTom Camera alerts on the phone, or just using the sound of the relevant app.

I'm sure more reading of the manual will highlight a display off or dim function - having come from a Saab I like to turn the display lights off if I'm not using them rather than struggle to see out of the car at night with Blackpool illuminations inside.

On the other hand I'm tempted to invest in a Road Angel and tuck that away so the phone can sit in the cubby and leave the dash and windscreen totally gadget free.

The other annoying thing at the moment is having to plug the phone in, it'd be better if carplay ran on bluetooth (perhaps it does but it seems to override bluetooth anyway)

My road angel needs to be on the windscreen to get signal.

Wireless CarPlay has been developed, I think the new 5 series is the first car to support it. There will be aftermarket solutions soon.

Wireless CarPlay uses Bluetooth to make the initial connection, then hands over to wifi for the video transmission - Bluetooth doesn't have enough bandwidth. This means that the battery drains fairly fast, it is fine for short trips, but I'd still prefer to plug in for longer journeys.
