I'm after getting a radio+Sat Nav for the GTi. I had considered getting a second hand RNS 510, but they are a lot of money for a second hand unit, and dont have bluetooth/hands free which I would really like.

What I am really after is...

Sat Nav (or the ability to download a maps app to use that doesn't need constant internet connection)
Bluetooth handsfree
Smooth, not fussy appearence
<£500, and if possible <£300 - I'm not after anything fancy with lots of tricks

There are too many unit out there and I can't get my head around why some are £1000s, and others are much cheaper.

Anyone got any suggestions for me?

I’m guessing the reason for a big difference in prices are many but first would be a brand name will always be more even if it has less features

others maybe as they loos the same but might not have what the more expensive ones have, you might fine a HU with a 7” screen and only costing £150 and then once you start reading the spec you fine it has no sat nav, no bluetooth, no digital TV, just a radio, SD card reader for music, CD/DVD player and rear view camera

and some that might have a sat nav future might be the cheaper ones where if you have music on you can’t see the map on the screen and will only see the mao if you switch off music (I had one like this, soon got rid of it)

write down what it must have and go by that

I ended getting a no name 1DIN one from eBay (same goes for a 2DIN if thats what you need), I’ve had it for about 3 or 4 years now and am very pleased with it and not yet let me down, cost me £217

It has:

Sat nav, it came with Igo 8, I’ve upgraded it to Igo Primo
Radio, AM-FM
Bluetooth, connect to mobile phone for hands free, will also load contact name & numbers from the phone, will also stream music stored on mobile to HU
DVB-T TV, no point it coming with analog TV when only digital available, but some cheap HU’s still come with analog
DVD/CD player that can read MP3,AVI,MOV and other files
SD card, reading MP3 music fils and also MOV,AVI and other movie files
Front-back speaker support
Staring wheel control connection
Revers camera

Find one in your price band that comes with the features you’re after

here’s mine, I’ve personalised it with the Lotus start up logo and also the Sat nav splash screen, some of these HU’s let you do that others only have a small pre set logos

Do you have a Double Din GTI or Single.

It it's a double din then I can recommend Clarion NX504E not only does it have Bluetooth & Navigation, it also has Bluetooth Streaming DAB as well as voice control all yours brand new for £450.00

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Clarion-NX504E-Double-di...

For around £300.00 then you need to look for a used unit.

I had a similar question ao thought I'd ask here rather than start a new thread.

Specifically interested in whether there's much advantage in the big brands as they seem to be roughly 3 times the price.

Looking for a double din with Bluetooth and GPS (Alfa 159 if that's significant).

Seems to be loads of no name ones for around £150. Are the Sony/JVC/Clarion/Alpine ones so much better?

They're more reliable plus you have some backup if they go wrong also you can update the maps etc, I've had customers use the cheaper units, they're a bit hit & miss but you might get a good one or you could always buy a used name brand unit.
