Hi Folks

Years ago I had a single din Sony head unit that had a fold down front that hid all the buttons & controls. The whole face was a screen which you could also turn off so there were no silly flashing lights & controls.

To be honest I think all the head units kicking around at the moment look pretty ridiculous with the amount of buttons, controls and silly flashing lights!

Any recommendations for a clean looking head unit?

Cheers

James

PS if it helps it needs to go in a classic range rover.

Yes, thankfully there are still some available for those of us (with taste) who aren't into tacky looking head units from Halfords but still want all the features. Some of these could pass for OEM units:

Continental:
http://www.continental-automotive.com/www/automoti...

Kienzle:
https://www.kienzle.de/kienzle-audio.html

This was recently been replaced but can still be found new. It is quite popular amongst MB and BMW enthusiasts with cars from the 80s and 90s.

Could you not go original fit. Or there are some later originals that look simple .

I would love to go back to factory but the original stereo had been butchered both in & out by the previous owners and replaced with a high end system which was partially removed (badly!)

I've managed to source all the replacement dash plastics but the original head unit, amp, sub & changer are pretty hard to find in good working order (even trying to figure out exactly what type was in is harder than you think!)

The rest of the car is amazing (Jap import) so condition is fantastic but whoever messed with the stereo needs shooting!

Nakamichi CD-400 or CD-500 for a classic Range Rover would work well.

Buy a bluetooth aux lead for music streaming....

i'm another that finds modern stereos pretty ghastly to look at,but the ones pictured on this page make even me wonder if i should ditch the period Blaupunkt in my car.

Have faced this issue many a time. I'd have liked a nice subtle head unit for my MX5 with a few mod cons or even just decent sound quality and an aux in. The closest I found was the Continental one shown above except it lights up in amber the MX5 is all green. The Nakamichi ones are nice but if you're lucky enough to find one, they go for mad money. Becker used to do some nice stuff but they're long gone. Doesn't leave much choice at all!

I've decided just to fit a blanking plate and just have a small amp hidden in the back. I'll just have an aux port and volume adjustment in the front. Bit of a pain to set it all up but I gave up hunting for anything else.

These are brilliant, BT, aux & SD card, but a simple interface & you can change the background colour. Really simple & look OE in 90's cars. The images suggest the lights are bright they are not.

Yes several, in my Landruiser, Insight & also previous cars. They are pretty good & do everything quite well with simple enough controls.
