I've been experimenting with route planning software (Basecamp and Tyre) in the hope of loading a finished route into my Garmin sat nav. If I use a set of waypoints to define a route then send the file to the sat nav, will the sat nav pick up the route itself or just the waypoints and work out it's own route between them?

I had the same problem when planning a route around Europe.

The only way I found was to manually enter the way points directly on the Garmin, Else it always did the same took the easiest route rather than the roads I wanted to drive.

Don't know which Garmin you have, but on a recent Nuvi, I found it easier to stab a waypoint pin into (new) waypoints in Basecamp, load them all into the Nuvi, then use Trip Planner app in the Nuvi (was Routes) to select waypoints for the day's trip then save them as a Trip in the Nuvi.

Nuvi then works out the street route as per your preset requirements; shortest/quickest or you can change that for the saved Trip.

You have to got back into Trip Planner after you've saved the route, but individual waypoints can then be dragged up and down the journey 'route' as you change your plans. There's an 'Optimise Order' feature in T/Planner to completely foul things up and invent journeys you don't want to take.

It works for me, but I keep a few years of waypoints in the Nuvi, backed up in Basecamp, so most places I want to visit are already loaded in the unit.
