What’s everyones thoughts on the best detector on the market, it’s been years since I had one and you can’t trust online “top ten’s” anymore.

I thought they'd largely been replaced by GPS-based things like Waze? They still seem to be big in the USA though. You can get a box that recognizes the TETRA radios that the emergency services use, but TETRA (Airwave) is due to be replaced with some sort of 4G technology I think?

they are all worthless

current type approval allows for cameras with a range of 1000meters, you wont even see the van, and the laser is only on for a second or two whilst it takes a reading and they are so tightly focused there is almost no over spray to detect

waze has saved me a few times

Set this for the correct speed for the road and you'll never get a ticket, guaranteed wink

(Other than that: Waze!)

Waze, The cliché but effective Mk1 Eyeball...

For the most part, not being caught out involves careful choices of place and time. Trunk routes, villages and changes of limit are far more likely to be policed. - If there are tell-tale signs of casualty reduction engineering, and you're on a major route, you can probably expect fixed or mobile speed cameras to form a part of that.

This ^^^

Seriously, speed camera and vans are bloody obvious, painted bright colours and pretty much always in the same place. If you don't spot one it's because you aren't observing, and if you aren't observing SLOW DOWN !

Radar detectors are effectively useless now because adaptive cruise control systems use the same frequencies as the cameras causing constant false alarms.

That would explain why my old one goes loopy. Either that or it picks up traffic lights sensors.

As above, the only answer really is your eyes. I'm certainly not of the Brake persuasion, but if you're driving at a speed and with a level of awareness which means you can't see and slow down to speed cameras, you're driving too fast and/or paying too little attention.

Things like Waze can catch most of them, but if you rely on it you're still going to get caught out occasionally.

Jesus! I remember when piston heads used to be a forum for drivers .Not a stomping ground for "Brake" trolls.

Not really - but as others have said, just pay attention when pressing on and dont speed through villages etc.

Gosh you're a bore. Speed limits have dropped hugely all around the country. My local council wants to make the few NSLs we have 30s. I am objecting but in all likelihood, the changes will go ahead anyway. These are backroads with little traffic, but the safety above all else brigade don't like fast roads even if they don't have a history of accidents. Once they change to 30s, will I stick to 30mph on roads I've spent the last 30 years being able to choose my own safe speed between 0mph and 60mph? No I won't. I'll drive like I always have, and if I pick up the odd speeding ticket, so be it. And I suspect I'll do a lot more overtaking. The authorities don't seem to realise that completely inappropriate speed limits encourage overtaking which is riskier than not overtaking.

Is this Mumsnet?, seriously people can you not resist the urge to tell me how YOU think I should drive.
I sometimes forget I should be doing 60 in my van, that’s all.
Thanks to anyone who answered my question without being a d!ck. I’ll try Waze 👍
As for the rest of you, I’ll know who to ask if I ever need some driving gloves and matching pipe pouch,🙄 ‘kin ell!!. You’ve all turned into that Harry Enfield character who does not believe you wanted to do that.

Understood, but times change. The vehicles may well be safer these days but the standard of driving has plumeted. Red lights and even sensible speed limits are being routinely ignored. Drivers need to improve.

I haven't had a ticket in 29 years, so I'm obviously doing something right. It's called using observation, and choosing a time and a place where it's appropriate. Perhaps it's people like you who NEED speed limits, because you're clearly unable to do anything but repeat a well-worn mantra.

Get a Saphe Mini. About £50, no subscription and no wires. Great bit of kit. It won't detect a van/camera through radar/laser, but pairs with your phone and works on GPS. Very neat and discrete. Not designed to make drivers cheat the speed limit but will be an extra pair of eyes.

I used to be a speed demon in my younger days, but thankfully never got a ticket

Now I’m pretty chilled and most manned speed traps you can actually spot way in the distance, try to train yourself to look right up the road ahead, it’s a hard to remeber to do it, but does pay off

We always have a van outside our house and you can see it from about a mile away if you are looking, many locals still get tickets even though it’s as regular as clock work

The above said, I think waze saved me driving a van about 6 weeks ago, I always run it even when it’s just a local trip
