I see there is some kind of subscription service for traffice updates on the TomTom. Does this automatically re-route you to avoid jams like the SmartNav product?
Anyone tried it out?

i believe it works via bluetooth to your mobile phone and then GRPS to a traffic server. It works out if there is a better route around the obstruction or if your best to sit in the jam.

On tomotm3 (I have not tried it on 5 yet) it was gprs via bluetooth and a phone, unless you had an xda or the like.

You could tell it to autoreroute or you could leve it in manual mode and decide yourself.

Thanks for the replies. So I guess you pay a subscription to TomTom and you pay for the GPRS data on the phone. Doesnt sound too unreasonable if you use is sparingly.

Has anyone actually seen it in action?

yes I used it on my tomtom 3 system until I bought a car with a bluetooth phone kit that killed the connection (now orted with a sonyericsson k750 which is a little smarter with bluetooth).

It worked quite well, sometimes it was a bit late so I got told about the jam when I was in it but other times it proved useful. I don't recall getting it to reroute much, but I was happy with an idea of how long I was going to be sat there for.

I will try tomtom5 traffic in the next few weeks.

You are correct, you pay 50 off euros for the service and then gprs charges which are pretty low

I use it on tomtom5, it's free for the first month.

Uses bluetooth phone and you can tell it to update and reroute automatically during your trip (if you want it to).

Sometimes the traffic info is a load of crap though.

I've been using it for about 3 months now, and my free subscription still works (but don't tell tomtom)
