Amazon have these on sale currently - RSP is £155 but they are selling them for £104!!! Its wide screen and has european maps, POI, safety camera, ATM, Petrol stations.

Frankly at the price it seems very good.

One question can you buy South African maps for it?

Be slightly wary about the 250 - my son has had one for about a year and it seems that this model cannot be upgraded with new maps from the Garmin website. Appears you need to get one of their more upmarket models that supports map upgrades.
Please someone - prove me wrong - then I can get the lads 250 when he upgrades !

I have a 205, which cannot receive map upgrades. I can download new car icons and new camera locations, but that's about it.
Bought mine here in Sweden, with Euro maps, and it works a treat over here.
Quick to locate routes, and calculate reroutes if you make a wrong turn. Clear screen. Good voice commands. Useful locator tools like nearest petrol station, food, hotels, etc.
I've used it in the Uk too, where it wasn't so good. Seemed like the satellite location was out by a few metres so every now and then it thought you were not on the road you were actually on (but 20 metres or so to the side of it in a field ?)

Does the Tom Tom do eastern European Maps? (Bulgaria specifically).

Are you sure about the 250 ? Quite a new model. Garmin will sell map upgrades, when they have one available! The 250 has no "service updates", not the same as maps. NT Ver 2009 has only just been released, couple of weeks ago !!

The 250W is definately one of the latest, only avail since about April and you need to ask Garmin about adding Africa to it, Probably sell you plug-in SD card with it on. Good basic unit if that is what you want/need (No trafic/Mp3/Bluetooth etc !)

Other info on Garmnins at: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC...

I have a 250w that I bought in the USA in March.
I registered it with Garmin and a couple of months ago got an e-mail telling me that due to the date I bought it, I was entitled to a free map upgrade to the 2009 version.

Downloaded the upgrade, followed their procedure - no problems at all.

I run the UK and full Europe maps on an SD card, giving me total coverage of all the areas I drive in.

The Garmin Nuvi 250W with the European maps has detailed coverage only of Sofia in addition to major roads in the country. I can't see an option on their website for buying detailed maps of the whole country.

All I need is to be able to drive from Sofia Airport to Bansko. Getting round Sofia is very tricky but once out on the open road it will be fine.

Saying that, I guess it depends how far off the main road system Bansko is; Multimap just has it as a dot on the map about 15 miles east of the E79, so it may not show up at all on the map in the Nuvi.

Hmm so this is the dilema - when you go into Comet etc and ask noone really knows. You look at the Tom Tom or Garmin website and there are no numbers. The FAQ has nothing relating to my query.

I have a 250W at home; if I remember I'll spark it up later and see what kind of detail is available in Bulgaria.

Cheers that would be excellent.
Can you just do a route to bansko from your home postcode 7 then fast fwd through the trip?
Or simply to sofia airport to bansko?>

I'd try the airport to Bansko route to see if it even knows where Bansko is first smile

Failing that, I guess the best bet would be to use a paper map (shudder!) to find the nearest town to Bansko on a major road and route to there, hoping to pick up local signs once you get close.

Thats the other problem - where doyou buy good road maps of Bulgaria (which have the town names in English? - as they have greek & Russian symbols in the language and often its impossible to take an educated guess at the translation.)
