I am planning a trip to the USA. I can see on the Garmin site that I can buy the maps for $99 but I'm not clear if I need anything else. How do I know if my unit has the capacity to take the extra maps?

Do I need to buy some kind of memory card?

Your best bet is to 'Google Garmin City Navigator North America 2009 SD card' - in the UK they can be bough quite legally for around £45.

The SD card is quite clever - it is actually an adapter with an embedded microSD card. So if you change your GPS in future to one which takes microSD cards, you can still use the US maps. You can use the SD/microSD card in any Garmin witht he correct slot - the mapping isn't 'married' to any specific receiver.

Using it is simplicity itself - no new menus, no need to connect to the Internet etc. All you have to do is take it out of the box, plug it into the slot in the side of the Garmin GPS receiver and switch on. Just type 'Canada' or 'United States' as the address country, then the province or state as the address 'county', followed by city and street just as you would for Europe!
