I've read a number of threads on here about different detectors but think some new models have been released since some of them. What are people's opinions on the best speed camera (no sat nav required) detector on the market up to around £500?

I was thinking the Pogo GPS Alert: http://www.pogogps.com/pogoalert.htm

However, just noticed Road Angel have a pretty good looking/spec unit, their top model the Professional Connected: https://www.roadangelgroup.com/ProductDetails.aspx

The Road Angel has the benefit of updating itself every few minutes, but other than that which is the best or are there any other top ones i should be considering? Due to having a leather dash i doubt ill want to fix one to it, but most can be mounted on the windscreen (not that great looking but no other choice i suppose!).

Incidentally, i would probably buy the add-ons most have for laser detection (even if they arent particularly great they have some advantages).

Thanks.

IIRC the pogo alert comes as standard with a detachable laser detector. Very small and compact and customer service is fantastic.

I think I may have posted this before but I have owned a Road Angel Pro Connected since its launch and have to say I am very pleased with it to date. So far it has not been able to detect a hand held laser gun, but the phone sim based unit does keep advising you where sites have been reported plus if you are the first person to go through such a set-up you can press a button on the remote supplied with the unit which then alerts other users that a gun or van is active which is very usefull. I travel all over the South surveying factories etc and have owned a Road Angel product for ages and in conclusion can say that when I have been late for an appointment due to traffic congestion lost and new to an area the Road Angel has without doubt saved me on at least 10 occasions. I have read reports on the POGO and it looks quite good as well.

Thanks for the replies. I was originally just going to buy the POGO unit as i had an OriginB2 before which worked well. However after seeing the Road Angel Pro Connected i was swaying towards that instead... but have been reading this thread on another forum which has somewhat put me off it:

I returned my first Pro Connected because of a fault and the new unit has never given any problems. I think that guy should have returned his unit, yes it does bleep off with safety camera van sites but on local Portsmouth roads I know the unit is spot on with the location and yes it may not be active but the reminder does make me check my speed. On the way down to Japfest the other week it bleeped at a number of bridges and as I had the unit set at max distance it was up to me to adjust my speed or potentially get done although at 6 in the morning I don't think old bill are that motivated as its easier to catch people during the normal daylight hours. I think you have to apply a proportion of common sense with the use of these units because when I first got mine I thought great I'll travel everywhere at 90 mph and slam on the brakes and not get done because the unit will warn me but of course that was just an unrealistic daft thought. As I have said over the many years I've had Road Angel products they have worked for me the Pro Connected is expensive but in my opinion I wouldn't be without it. My wife calls it my 'dummy' as I won't venture out without it.

Hmm, really unsure which to go for out of the POGO Alert and Road Angel Pro Connected.

There does seem to be a lot of negative feedback on satellite connection times for the RA and also constant bleeping for potential camera van sites would end up making me turn that feature off. But i think the unit looks better than the POGO one and also the audo updates with the sim are good.

Tough one!

It's a pity that there is no more feedback from owners of both units on this forum really as I would have thought this sort of product would have been snapped up by most members.

I have a RA Pro Connected and highly rate it. It developed one fault where it switched off occasionally after warning of a camera but a download fixed it. The service from RA was good, emailed the fix quickly and I have no problems since. The plonker on tyresmoke couldn't seem to get it into his head that any detector can only warn you of mobile camera sites, not where the camera is at any one time, probably because they are...errr... mobile. I think he really needed Mystic Meg in the car with him.

I dont go on about the pogo as much as i used to as i was referred to as a fanboy etc so simply refer to it and give what info i know.

IMO the for over 200 but under 500 the best piece of kit out there is the pogo. Tried a RA and it was quite frankly st.I have a pogo drive and do 50k miles a year and i have 0 points on my license even though i rarely stick to speed limits on motorways etc.

Doing 50K a year proves it works for you, I must say I very rarely exceed the limit on motorways these days far too many unmarked cars for my liking

Not really a biggie in terms of unmarked. There are signs wrt to the unmarked and i have the attitude that i will get done eventually whatever happens and likely will be done when actually trying to be legal so may as well get done for something "worthwhile" if you see what i mean.

I'm considering the mini-coyote. Has anyone tried it?

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

I decided to go for the Pogo Alert in the end because i used to have an Origin B2 unit they gave me £100 off the Alert!

Currently unsure how im going to install it in my car though (R8), very little room to the right of the instruments panel and of course the cigarette sockets is by the handbrake. Will probably have to get it hardwired but still just fix it to the windscreen due to it having a leather dash. Bit concerned as to how many trim panels will have to be removed to get the hard wiring done though... anyone hardwired a unit in an R8 before?

Actually thats one of the things I forgot to mention the RA can be charged up and used without the lead, quite handy if you don't want wires running everywhere. Good luck with the POGO and don't forget to give some feedback which may help others decide.

Thanks David.

First impressions of the unit itself are good, nice size, small and cube like. Looks like it's made well and the aluminium sides are a nice touch. The screen seems to be of a good resolution; currently i just have the unit resting down near the handbrake as that's where the cigarette lighter socket is until i hopefully get it hardwired.

Once i get that done ill post up some better feedback when it's properly in use.

Incidentally the ability to use the RA without having it connected to power is good, but whats the battery life like?

Job to tell because it switches itself off when you stop for a length of time then the motion sensor switches it back on when you move off but I've had it in all day before now and pop it in the glove box on charge if parked up for a while, but I'd say at least 4-5hours

I got 6 hours continuous out of my RA Connected a while back and there was still some left. The latest download from them improves battery management I believe.
