Garmin or TomTom?

I'm looking at the latest from both but cant decide, read so many conflicting reports.

I want Traffic data ... seems the free Garmin offering is OK?

Other 'musts' ... lane assist, traffic re-route, widescreen ...

Any comments gratefully received.

I got a Garmin Nuvi 765T (MP3 player SDCard, Lane assist, bluetooth phone connectivity...etc). The competitor was Tomtoms Live range. The Nuvi has it all but the Tomtom has GPRS which is where you get the traffic updates from. This is a paid subscription which Im not a fan of where as the Nuvi takes the traffic data from the RDS which according to reviews isnt as good system.

I've posted on another topic on here but as the owner of a TomTom live 540 I can only say that I am very pleased with it to date. I waited ages to get a sat nav because I wasn't too sure about the radio based traffic info as I had read reports stating it wasn't too good. The 540 Live was worth the wait it does everything well. The live traffic info so far has been deadly accurate I travel around the South surveying industrial buildings and every time the TomTom has predicted my arrival time within a few minutes which impresses me anyhow. All the other things work well too but I still think the monthly sub is a bit high as I have also the RA Pro Connected to pay for

Thanks for the replies.

The TomTom Live is very appealing (I heard it works via Vodaphone tracking mobile phones on roads to gauge traffic) ... worth £8/month?

I've heard nothing but good things from Garmin owners, but its the TomTom's that seem to be rushed into the market place 'buggy' not full tested ....

Its as clear as mud!

So far its only turned itself off once since I've had it but there have been no other problems. Yes the idea of using the phone network to indicate slow traffic or jams is quite good and again so far has worked for me.

I had the unfortunate job of working within the industry and I sold a hell of a lot more Garmins than Tomtoms, and it says it all if every member of staff at my old place had a Garmin, including me, I have the Garmin 205w.......I wouldn't have a Tomtom.

I have the Garmin 550 Zumo which is mainly for bike use but I can use it in the car. Better than the £2k BMW professional too

I changed from Garmin 660T to TomTom 920 and found the TT was a fraction easier to use and had better routing. My son changed from a Garmin 660T to a TT 940 and thinks it is brilliant (he pays the £8 per month sub). I recommend TT's unreservedly.

Be careful, the newer garmin units have a lot less map detail than the older ones.

Tomtom are the way forward. Not only are the units easier to use, faster to use and a lot more polished than the garmin units, they (well the one/XL IQ Routes/LIVE) come with loads of features that are actually usable (lane assist etc) rather than pointless (mp3 players and picture viewers).

What should I be looking for in the current Garmin range? It's for my daughter and the car has bluetooth (but might want that if we borrow it for hire cares, etc.)

There are hundreds of models all with diff features. The ones for £300 seem to do the same as the £150 ones.

What are must have features, etc. I was thinking of a nuvi 265w.

I pesonally am not anti tom tom but the guy in halfords told me that they get 10 TT to 2 garmins come back as faulty but that may be because they sell more of one than the other ??

Tom Tom every time. I can't comment on their reliability although I've never had any problem with any SatNav systems ........ yet! However, I have tried most and Tom Tom, IMHO, really is the best ........ and significantly better than any vehicle fitted OEM SatNav, even the very latest offerings.

Maybe it's the complexity of the things - I bought my TT1 when they first came out, it's now been crushed (cracked casing) is on it's third memory card 'cos I keep adding maps and it's still completely reliable. Even though they've had some issues the TT Home stuff is very good for updating firmware and maanging updates.
