Gents,

I'm a bit of a computer nerd.

Where can I get Europe updates for my Garmin above - without paying £80 - £100?
Any cheap sites?

As far as I'm aware, no hacker (all of whom should have their fingers broken!) has managed to defraud Garmin by stealing map data.

If you can't afford to buy valid cards from Garmin, you might find that someone has one for sale on eBay.

Nick,
Never thought of the ebay option,- thought they might be out of date too?

I asked the question, as, last year on the way to Le Mans, the Garmin did not show (much) of the new Autoroute south of Sees, yet the machine was barely a year old. Likewise, went to see my son in Manchester and his house share was not listed either.

Thanks for replying.

£99 for lifetime map updates hardly sounds expensive...

I considered the lifetime upgrade, but is it transferable if you buy a new Garmin. Last time I upgraded the maps, mine failed shortly afterwards.

As I understand it, Garmin nüMaps Lifetime™ Europe is associated with a specific SatNav receiver.

Perhaps the penny will soon drop at Garmin. For such a policy is detrimental to 'churn' sales of new equipment....

The solution? Allow an owner to transfer a nüMaps Lifetime™ subscription to another Garmin SatNav for a token fee. Say £25.

Otherwise, unless you're a gadget person who simply must have the very latest, why bother to 'upgrade' your Garmin system? And lose all your 'favourite' addresses....

I wouldn't.

There are bad hackers (malicious) who as stated above should have fingers broken) and helpful ones as could be in this case....but this could be argued for hours the people with money against & the less well off for. this could be a good place to get the info you want.

Thanks for the follow-up, guys.

In the end went to 'NavCity' and got the SD card (Europe 2010) for £68.

Hopefully, this will have all the latest data.

Hackers who try to rip off legitimate software vendors are parasites on humanity.
If someone can't afford to buy something immediately, then they should either save up for it or obtain a credit agreement.

Actually, £68 might not be that much of a bargain as the latest version of City Navigator Europe NT comes out in a couple of weeks. Mine will be free - because for £100 I bought a lifetime subscription some months ago!

be warned - you could waste £90 like me for a map update (lifetime jobbie) and then waste 3 hours trying to load it and eventually give up but be £90 worse off. Should have just bought a new unit !
I think they are hard work to sort. I think an SD card will help me sort BUT the process that Garmin use for map updates is rubhish.

The last time it took around 4 hours to download and install the updates....and needed around 7Gb of disk space. After everything was completed, I still some huge found Garmin files lurking on my computer - until I offed them.

I agree that the on-line process is abysmal. Why can't they just send out update SD cards? It'd be much simpler.

Probably because some would sell copies for less than the original £80-£100...
