As my TomTom One V3 seemed to be getting a bit woolly depsite map sharing, I just stumped up £40 for the updates pack.

It also wants me to pay £20 for speed camera updates. My suspicion is that most fixed speed cameras are already there, and that any new ones should be covered by map sharing. Is that correct or should I cough up the £20 gratefully?

Also, despite downloading the quick-fix thingy, it's often taking 3-5 minutes to get a GPS signal now, which can be infuriating when setting off from a strange location. Is that normal?

Mapshare shares details of map changes reported by users, NOT speed camera locations.

The PocketGPSWorld speed camera database is more up to date though and relies on users reporting new/removed locations, rather than waiting for TomTom to update their database themselves - which if they're as accurate with that as with their maps then it could take a few years.

Interesting - so TomTom issue updates every quarter, and tell me to update my machine every week, yet the information is years old?

And - all the time I've been sending off details like 'speed camera removed' (eg at roadworks) they're not bothering to remove it? Have I spent £40 for nothing? I've never heard of PocketGPSWorld - is it better and cheaper?

The update was prompted by a very odd happening yesterday when I was Ightham in Kent and wanting to get to London Golf Club, which is a few miles to the north. Their postcode is TN15 7EH. Google Maps finds it, but TomTom wanted to take me half an hour south beyond Tunbridge Wells - utterly wrong. Can anyone else try this and see what they get?

PocketGPSWorld is http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/ - the only 'downside' is you have to download it and install it manually rather than use the TomTom app to buy/download.

If you're the first to spot a new camera, report it, and it's verified then you get a lifetime subscription and a refund of what you've go left on your current subscription. Although you can just buy a 1-time download to try it.

The maps are so out of date due to the lead-time of mapping the changes and putting them into the next release. That's one of the reasons they introduced mapshare: 1) to let you append info to your own maps so you can keep them up to date yourself; 2) so that they can use the user-contributed changes to speed up the amendments to their maps.

I've still found errors on the latest maps that I reported 5 years ago.

+1 for PocketGPSWorld. I've not come across a missing camera yet, and the installation/update procedure is simple once you've done it once. The only (theoretical) downside IMO is that ALL mobile van locations are reported, so unless you turn these off you will get lots of false alarms.

So pocketgps speedcamera locations wil go onto my tt One then?

Just wondering, cos my wifes One XL has broken (dropped it big time) but she had subscribed to speed cameras. I could do with her speed camera info on my old TT One.

Is it a case of copying the file s over from a backup?

It's just a case of dropping the speedcam files (2 of in each category) into the Map folder, e.g. United Kingdom & Ireland and select them from Configure POI (after restarting unit).

You might find others in the same folder off your wife's TT but will be very obvious as to what is what e.g. UK, PL, FR, US...just drag over what you need.
