US Road Trip - Use Hertz Neverlost or purchase my own?

Doing a bit of driving in the states at christmas, and in the summer

The cost for the Neverlost for both journeys is in the region of $300, which I think puts me in the realms of considering buying my own

So the question is, what portable units are good in the states?

I will be in seattle at christmas, so not too much of an issue, but in the summer I am going from LA, Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite< lake Tahoe and SF so need something that knows the more remote bits of the states!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Buy your own satnav there and sell on eBay USA when you get home or buy a UK model and get the US maps on eBay. I used Hertz Neverlost once in a rented 'Stang and it was rubbish!

Buy one in Wallmart when you get there, they start around $100 iirc. Keep hold of it for further trips or (as i have) download the map, they were on offer for about £49 a couple of months ago.

OP: slightly off topic - we've just done SF-Monterey-Death Valley-Mammoth-Yosemite-Sonoma-SF. Mammoth was a nice surprise - lovely scenery and we really enjoyed the Westin Mammoth Lakes hotel

Completely agree - it should be called the Hertz Frequently Confused - it's crap!
