Ok, I've had various levels of Tomtom on a PDA, and they've been good for what I wanted them for, but the PDA is just about knackered now, so I need a new satvav.

I want one that will have both UK & Europe (France)

and something similar to O/S mapping (Memory map??) that I can plan a route on "green lanes" for 4x4 driving, tomtom just shows you in the middle of green space.

I don't really want one that has to be updated from a "speciallist supplier" for several arms & legs, at regular intervals, but with the information obtainable from *other sources* on the internet

There's so many of them now-a-days, it would be too easy to buy the wrong one.

any suggestions please?

If you can't find one that will allow you to plan routes on greenlanes, there are other ways around it. There are aftermarket plugins for Tomtoms (and probably other systems too) that allow you to use it as a basic GPS showing range and bearing to waypoint.
eg http://www.webazar.org/tomtom/offroad.php?lang=uk

You can then use something like ITN converter which will allow you to place waypoints using google earth satalite imagery, and save it as itinary files for whatever version of satnav you're using. http://benichougps.blogspot.com/
