Pontoneer said: Are you sure ? That would mean that at an indicated 30 you would actually be going faster . I think your maths are wrong. At an indicated 30 on the car speedo the actual speed is approx 24 mph.

I am presuming you mean that I am a dick! It seems therefore that you have an intelligence problem as you are unable to understand the significance of the various parts of the discussion. It is also often the case that when a person cannot sustain his side in a discussion he has to resort to bad language and name calling. This puts you firmly in such a category. I do agree that some limits would APPEAR to be wrong in the eyes of some drivers but there has to be some consistancy. One cannot have the advised speed limits changing every few hundred yards, even though in some circumstances it would be relatively safe to do so.

No not you the other guy !!! im with you !! yes why would not want an acurate way of measuring your road speed so you can stay within the law?? however worrying about the actual speed is surely far less important than controling the car and paying proper attention to road conditions and other road users...yes?

Therefore, indicated 30mph will be somewhere between an actual 27mph and an actual 30mph

Therefore, indicated 30mph will be somewhere between an actual 27mph and an actual 30mph My speedo has a known error and at 30 mph actual speed it reads about 28, that is if one guesses right as there are no indications between 20 and 40 on the dial! Speedos may be allowed to be inaccurate (see a previous post re C & U Regs) but you are NOT allowed to use that 10 % by travelling at 10% over the legal speed limit as some people think!

AdrianEagle said: I think you will find that most speedos actually overread, i.e. at 30 mph actual speed, my dial type speedo reads around 25-29. As there are no numerals between the 20 and 40 marks one has to guess anyway! One more arguement for using a GPS! :-) Yes you are quite correct, but at least you got the gist of it! H

I don't think so - you stated " i.e. at 30 mph actual speed, my dial type speedo reads around 25-29 " therefore at an indicated 30 , you would have to be going faster than 30 . C&U regs are designed to ensure that speedometers should , if anything , overstate the actual speed rather than the other way about so that no one ends up going faster than they might think they are . Otherwise , speedo errors would have to be a defence for marginal speeding charges .

At actual speed of 30 mph my speedo reads approx 35 to 39 - I typed a 2 instead of a 3. Apologies to all.

No worries - on another forum I mistyped the same error ( regarding the year of a car ) three times in a posting , and never saw it until someone else commented on it !
