I couldn't give a flying f@@k if you did this to me, the only problem I have is when people do it and I end up having to smash on the brakes or they force there way across at the next set of lights, but as you say you don't do this then why do I care.
For all I know you don't know the road and made a mistake or know the road and caused me no problems.
If you have a (Very) fast car and you do this to me I'd probably actually like it, just to hear/see it pull away.

OP, I do this all the time, they hate me already for having a BMW, so nothing to lose lol.
I must admit though, it is very very very rare to get any kind of a reaction from those behind, if you are getting a reaction often, I'd think about having a look at how close you are to them when you pull back in (if it goes back to single lane).
I do find occasionally, that if you blat diesel man from the lights , down a slip road, or their particular hate, up a hill, audi's, mondeo's, and other standard repmobiles, they feel obliged to catch you up at illegal speeds, and quite often wont rest until they've overtaken you, no matter how long it takes them to achieve it.
I do find however, that you can most certainly get a reaction from a lot of people these days, if you awaken them from their 40 mph slumber in nsl's by overtaking them ......... or, just as often by people coming the other way, they don't seem to like overtaking much now.

There is a similar thing near me ... Set of lights, 3 lanes that merge very quickly to 2 after the lights. No one uses 3rd lane as it's quite dangerous apart from peeps like the OP ie look to jump the queue. Had a gti driver pile in front of me recently with no gap at all, I had to slam on my anchors to avoid a fookin accident!

- You know that the lanes merge after the lights.
- You didn't leave an adquate gap to allow the car in front to merge safely.
- You had to brake sharply to avoid rear ending the car in front of you.

Repmobiles are the worst for that, I see it all the time. No : your course of action is the anti social one ; intentionally trying to block the legitimate progress of another driver is likely to provoke a road rage incident and could lead to you being charged with careless or dangerous driving ( possibly the other driver as well , depending on how it pans out ) ; you , in essence , would be failing to allow another driver to safely complete a legitimate overtake and return safely to the nearside - actively blocking someone's return to the nearside could easily be construed as dangerous driving or racing on the public highway .Incidentally , you might attempt to speed up and block someone but there is always someone with a faster car than yours ; it might even be an unmarked police car - so you would find yourself in a very bad position .

How is it inconsiderate to use the lanes as provided? Rather use the right lane than queue like sheep and not make the lights. If everyone used the two lanes traffic would flow better.Nigel Worc's said:

Thought I'd have a look up to see if anyone had mentioned this.Seems to be an all too common occurance these days. Even on arrow straight roads, where their length is such I can see the bloody curvature of the earth, I'm expected to sit behind some dozy sod doing 40mph on a NSL. Madness.
If there are lots of cars between me and the one holding people up, as a considerate driver, I don't bother to overtake as my car is not exactly a Zonda. However, it amazes me that no one else nearer the front, in some quick cars, bother to go past.
In most cases I've been flashed at, for no reason, which although I'm 100% I've done nothing wrong still concerns me. This morning was a classic example of someone doing under 40 in a 60,not just the speed but also doing that really annoying speeding and slowing - that doesn't seem to have anything to do with where the road is going. The traffic was in two trains, with a gap after the two vans immediately in front of me. So I think the most efficient way of doing this is to nip in front of the vans on the next straigt, then on the (1.4km straight I just measured on google maps) pass the three/four cars holding everything up if nothing changes.
So hit the first straight - all clear - indicator on, neither van makes a attempt to do anything, I pull out then the lead van releases the tell tale plume of black smoke as he accelerates to try and close the gap up - I assume to stop me, the gap was that big before he did this that I could have coasted in and done little in terms of braking to slot in. I cruise past pull in, now having to brake as the gap I was going for had shrunk considerably, and he closes up my chuff giving me the lights, horn and wker sign. Cheers. I just give a nice wave as that's how I role and wait for the next straight. T
he van slowly loses ground as now on the looooong straights we're hitting a dizzy 45mph in places. In fact he the van behind me closes and turns off the next left anyway (more wker signs when I give them a thumbs up). Anyways, onto the 1.4km straight, nothing coming indicator on, all cars hold station, but as I pull out the van behind me starts flashing his lights, whilst making no attempt to overtake himself, as I pull in and pull away at a ballistic 60mph, on completing the move, a car that must have been 400m away flashes at me and the car behind flashes at me.
I had been considering never overtaking again, when reflecting on this today, thinking its only a matter of time before the police recieve some report of this mad man hitting the speed limit. However, after reading this thread - screw them. I know I'm acting in a safe controlled manner. I just don't get it, at what point does your life become so sad that you get annoyed with others actions, even if they have no bearing on your own existence.

I always thought the rule of thumb is your actions shouldn't impede other drivers progress...anyone objecting to this is probably the same type that doesn't understand merge in turn; guarding their queue position by staring dead ahead whilst glued to the bumper of the car in front. Ass hats.
maybe if you just got on with driving rather than over-analysing everything you might actually just get where your going a bit quicker rather than pissing around with a should i/shouldnt i manouvre whilst us drivers who do just get on with sit behind you pulling our hair out wondering when the fk your going to get on with it!
