Sorry to drag this back up, but my OH was driving along in a 4000 mile, 14 plate hire car at the weekend and the gearbox seized totally on her completely locking the wheels yikes

She left a continuous pair of 11's down the road, the following vehicle managed to stop without hitting her.

The car did not come to a complete stop, it skidded to a rest exactly as I predicted.
Hi Rob buddy, this was in a 14 plate car? OMG that is dire, do you know if the trans had dropped all it's oil? Or why had it locked up?

I'm glad your OH came out of it alright.

Yes I know what you're saying, and did throughout the discussion.

All I was saying really, if you read between the lines was, try to leave as much safety margin between you and the vehicle ahead as possible, the technical reasons for doing so didn't really matter too much did they?

A vehicle may not come to a complete dead stop as a rule true, but leaving an extra couple of seconds safety margin has to be safer no?

I still think that was very good advice.

Incidentally, have read a lot recently coming from your quarter, I mostly agree with a lot of your viewpoints. I always thought your handle was about you being in Winston Green young offenders institution at one time, but I know now it's that character from Pulp Fiction, lol.

I fix problems wink

It looks like it had been delivered to the dealership with a hole in the gearbox. Was fine when she used it around town, first time out on a NSL road it completely locked up yikes

Couldn't tell at the side of the road if it was a failure that had blown the casing open from the inside, or if something had hit it and punched it open leading to the failure.

Impressive skid marks...

Christ, have the hire firm offered anything in the way of recompense? Perhaps they should, or the manufacturer/dealer whatever, you don't need me to tell you that the outcome of this could have been very different. Begs the question of how well the vehicle had been assessed prior to being hired, unless an internal problem. Either way tranny going bang is bad news whoever is at fault eh?

Imo your OH did well to remain cool and bring the vehicle to a controlled stop.
