Vehicles should merge safely and considerately.
Absolutely correct, but how many considerate bus drivers do you know?

Not really in congested traffic. The bus didn't change lane to pass on the left.
Agreed - its one of those that we'd have to see it to really pass final comment.

I guess I've seen one too many bus drivers thunder up the inside lane including after it ends, and in fairness I've seen many a car driver just pull across another vehicle - I can believe either scenario. The OP does suggest the bus driver took deliberate steps to block a car entering the lane - my only real point is that if you're undertaking, either in traffic or in the scenario of the bus lane, you should exercise a degree of caution, more so than if overtaking, that sadly seems to be missing. I'd happily overtake a bus/lorry at 70 while they are doing 50 but would I ever undertake them like that in traffic?

It was quite deliberate to my observation. As written earlier if I had been the bus driver apart from not trying to take tread off the back tyre of the cycle it would have been easier to hold back let the Clio turn left as it was absolutely clear that was the intention. Then overtaken the cyclist later on when the bus lane widens at another junction and approaches some parking spaces. It would have resulted in overtaking the cyclist at exactly the same point.

The bus driver may have been mistaken about priority as a couple of posters here appear to be.

Regardless about priority, the bus driver appears to have missed his primary objective -- safe progress.

The Clio -- turning out of his lane was not going to steal his place behind the bike. He was going to get there just as quickly. The question was how safely he was going to do it.

He's also lost out on the opportunity to be helpful to another which may or may not feature in his set of priorities.

A driver who is 100% certain he is in the right can present just as much risk.

Bus lanes can be a pain in the backside, not many drivers are sure when they can use them or not.

Reading the signs helps, and what I did was to log onto our local council web site to chck them out. Difficult I know if your in unfamiliar territory, if in doubt, stay out of the bus lane.
