.... A healthy debate about when to filter in when there is a lane closure would be constructive (I believe if we all filtered at the point of closure when queueing it would avoid all the bumper to bumper blocking etc, but as most people don't do that it's a dilemma whether to drive past everyone and just expect to be let in.)
Honestly, there would be no constructive debate on this one, been done to death over the years (mainly in GG);there are two polar opposite views and never the twain shall meet smile (although I agree with you thumbup )
That's easy to sum up

Fast flowing traffic = move into open lane early
Slow moving traffic = use all available road space up to merge point

The logic behind those answers is simple ...
Why chance harsh braking in fast flowing traffic at/near merge point
If they did do not open space to be used then it would be coned off

Morning Rog, not sure if a woosh parrot would be appropriate right now or just ask how you go about convincing 33 million other drivers that the answer's easy smile

So we have got onto the subject of conspicuity. I have recently acquired a car with a very loud exhaust, and a sport button which lets you choose to drive more or less quietly. I love the roar from wide open throttle with the exhaust valve open. I wonder whether and/or why I might aim to be more discrete.
Hi Mark, I've warned you about this before. You're just so susceptible, vulnerable even, to aural seduction. I'm not in the least bit surprised that you bought this car; against my advice, as you well know. A nice quiet Porsche Cayman S would have been a much better choice; high residual value at five years, easy to sell on - particularly in red, the colour everyone wants!

I've no idea why you are so into gliding; I think you would be much happier piloting a Eurofighter Typhoon. Oh, yes, I nearly forgot, of course, don't tell me, I bet your glider's got an engine. biggrin

Best wishes and happy noise abatement.

Kind regards,

John

Well, yesterday I had it in loud mode. Today I had it in quiet mode. It was pretty good either way. Sorry not to have got your next car sorted for you but I don't think I could have enjoyed a Cayman S quite as much!

OK, fair comment. I'm grateful that you've given me at least 5 years to persuade Jenny that I know exactly where I can get her the perfect car to go shopping in. Does it actually fit in the carparking spaces at Waitrose? If not, that could be the end of my dream!

I think with respect to double-orbit at a roundabout that it depends on the motive.
If you are doing it for selfish / egoistic reasons then it is rubbish.
If you have a pressing need to be somewhere as soon as possible but safely and have been inexplicably delayed then it is a good call (advanced).
