I don't suppose there are any plans to release other formats of this are there? Notably a Kobo version?
If not, I'll just go ahead and buy the paperback version, it's just that an eReader is perfect for travelling, which I do a lot of.

Is the Kindle version identical to the paperback in that it contains any photographs or is it text only?
The content is exactly the same, although if you read it on a tablet or phone via the app, the pictures will be displayed in colour, rather than black & white. I did re-edit the pictures for the paperback so that they displayed better in B&W, which may be why they don't show up too well on monochrome devices.

I'm tied in to an exclusive contract with Amazon at the moment - it gives me a higher royalty percentage and allows them to "lend" the book to KDP subscribers. I get a royalty for every "borrower" who reads at least 10%.

I'm not sure how long I'm tied in with Amazon exclusively. To be honest, I'm not very familiar with the whole ebook market. I assumed that Amazon would be the best place to publish & I never really considered any other platforms. You don't actually need to buy a Kindle - there is a free app for ios and android devices & I've always used the ipad app for Kindle books.

Thanks again to anyone who's bought a copy. I've got to sit in a polling station for 15 hours tomorrow - I might just buy a copy myself!

Hi Reg,
Ordered the paper back copy on wednesday and it arrived yesterday. I've already read upto chapter 18.

Thanks for taking the time to publish your work.
Have you ever thought of putting a instructional video together? Now that would be interesting!

Cheers
Kris

Reg,

Very nearly finished reading the paperback. Hugely impressed, its a lot less dry than Roadcraft, so a lot more accessible.

I shall have to buy you a pint if our paths cross...

I'm giving some thought to a Youtube channel, but I'm seriously lacking in equipment and technical knowledge at the moment, so don't hold your breath.

Perhaps a decent quality dashcam might be sufficient for cornering and positioning demonstrations, but a forward view out of the windscreen gives a very limited perspective if you're trying to demonstrate overtaking or motorway driving. It would also be beneficial to show whats happening with the cars controls, instrument display etc. so I'm not really sure where to start.

I was always very averse to apearing on camera in person - I even hate having my photograph taken - but I featured in a BBC documentary last year so I'd probably be more relaxed in front of the camera these days.

I'm in the middle of writing a second book, which should be finished by mid-summer, so that's taking up most of my spare time at the moment. Perhaps after it's published I'll start exploring the possibility of doing some videos.

I've just finished reading it. Now I'll read it again and find stuff I missed the first time round. Very useful and a very easy read. Back to unconscious incompetence! Passed the IAM car test in 1998 by the way (to put my comments into perspective).

Quick update - I've just published my second book - "How Not to Crash"

I've analysed accident statistics in detail and written some straightforward advice on how to avoid the most common mistakes which lead to road accidents (and how to avoid being involved in other people's mistakes and accidents)

It's not an advanced driving book in the traditional sense - it's written for anyone of any driving ability or level of experience.

It's available in Kindle ebook and paperback formats & as usual, you can read the first couple of chapters for free:

How Not to Crash

Please be careful with the price of the paperback. Amazon and Createspace (Amazon's print-to-order company) are taking an age to price it correctly on the UK. It should be £11.99. Some resellers are selling it for less, which is great, but some are selling it for up to £75, which is a rip-off.

I accidentally bought the first book on kindle yesterday. I was browsing on amazon and I went one click too far in the process. I'm really looking forward to it but I'm going to have to read in secret because my wife already thinks I'm a sad loser without reading books about driving.

If the book is as good as most of your topics I'm sure it'll be a great read and well worthwhile picking up a few new techniques for making me a safer (and faster) driver. After all, the best performance mod you can make is becoming a better driver.

At the risk of sounding like damming with faint praise, i'm enjoying theses books more than i thought i might! Advanced Driving can be a subject that sounds potentially rather dull, boring and often discussed at great length and pedantry by men with beards. But, you know what, Reg's books make me laugh, some proper gems hidden away, like describing the path of an accident as "backwards-forwards-backwards-forwards-lamppost-hospital" and i think we've all been, or nearly been, <<<< there eh..... ;-)

It's also encouraged me to try to do some commentary, not something i've ever really had to do before, despite doing a lot of more "racecraft", track and high performance based courses in my line of work.

So if you see me driving along talking to myself, don't worry, i'm not mad (probably)

Nice one, Reg!
I have a collection of around 150 books on driving technique and I always look forward to something new – so I’ve just ordered the paperback of your latest.

I have worked for many years as a ‘road safety professional’ here in Sydney.

I do like your chapter on driving standards in the UK. Well the same happens here; just that the base level is much lower!

Crash data shows Britain’s roads to be some of the ‘safest’ in the world – I think because the standards are higher and drivers are more interested. I say this because in the past few years many publications on driving have been released in the UK, whereas here in Oz there has been, er, nothing! There is obviously a market in the UK!

In my opinion your two recent books and video clips complement the work of John Lyon (Advanced Driving), Ben Collins (How to Drive) and the DVDs of Chris Gilbert and Roadcraft (2013). Even the Safe Driving for Life program has released a number of good publications.

Congratulations and thank you.

If only we can get those ‘experts’ in the Road Safety Empire to read your work – the academics, ‘(just because they have written a paper on some related item!), doctors, psychologists, IT guys (“I’ve got an app that can identify bad driving”), parents of children killed in crashes, traffic engineers and planners, politicians and lobby group leaders; to name a few, who all consider themselves road safety experts.

Driving nearly 40 yrs here, passed IAM nearly 15yrs ago and still learning. Although I still have my Z4M we've bought two newish BMW automatics, 325d and X3, with multi mode transmissions and flappy paddles. Thought I'd get out my old version of roadcraft out to see what it says about autos; still as dry as a dry thing and absolutely nothing about auto driving. Therefore I head to trusty old PH and to the AD section. Spotted this thread, read the reviews and thought why not! Ordered from Amazon and on its way. That'll be a refresher then!

Book news!

I’ve spent some time working on a second edition of Advanced & Performance driving & I’m very pleased to announce that it’s now available in both paperback & Kindle ebook format via Amazon, just in time for Christmas online shopping!

I’ve written new chapters covering automatic gearboxes, dual clutch gearboxes, electric cars and left-foot braking, together with a surprise post script, links to all my Youtube videos wherever relevant and a new cover. It’s also been professionally formatted this time, so the content page should actually line up with the correct page numbers!

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Advanced-Performance-Driv...

It’s been a while since I did any (hobby) writing, but I really enjoyed writing this update & I’m revisiting plans for further books whilst we’re locked down.

Hi Reg

I received an original copy a few weeks ago and I am still working my way through it (just finished the motorway chapters). I am enjoying it, like your humour and I have picked up many tips along the way.
I enjoyed reading about you speeding perfectly legally whilst as a police driver but I wondered what cars were you in? I am guessing unmarked BMW 330d’s or something along those lines?

Anyway thanks Reg and I’d like to book a day with you next year at some point Covid permitting!

All the best James
