I haven't been posting much recently, but work has been busy and I'm in the middle of writing a second book which is all new material.
Once it's published, I'll post a few chapters on here as posts - I'll be challenging some of the established advanced driving techniques and advice, so hopefully it should bring a bit of debate back to the forum
A while back I suggested to the mods (and I put a survey up in a thread) that this forum should be renamed "Driving Skills" to encourage people to dip into the forum without thinking it's just a collection of stringback-and-pipe types and to invite some discussion on "alternative" driving skills like off-roading, competition driving etc.
My suggestion was summarily dismissed by a mod, so I shuffled off with my tail between my legs and drove my Rover to the tobacconists for an ounce of rough shag.
Once it's published, I'll post a few chapters on here as posts - I'll be challenging some of the established advanced driving techniques and advice, so hopefully it should bring a bit of debate back to the forum

You can't really have a debate on this section. Anybody who poses an alternative view with reasoning is often dismissed by the "I've been highly trained" brigade. Be interesting to see the debates on alternative thinking that Reg is writing.
I'd love people to post videos of them driving, maybe just a 20s extract of a situation and get people to critique, but you need to be able to take it. One of the best debates was a guy who did an overtake on an open bend with some visibility but had to back off as a car in front pulled out on him. The over take went well in the end but the various details like reading the cars body language, the road signage and whether it was safe to start etc, was good. When someone posts a description (like the forcing my way in at the end of a merge in turn) results in lots of views as people imagine the actual situation differently before we even get to the different opinions on whats right.

I think that was me: we ended up with the usual open forum issues - there were some very good comments and observations, almost entirely buried in comments from people who hadn't bothered to read the post, were coming from a fixed viewpoint or were randomly trolling. If this were a more restricted forum, with a mechanism for building a trust model, then it would be very much worth following your suggestion. You're probably right and that seems to go for pretty much anything to do with driving, the law and not that I've looked, but who's doing who in eastenders There is a fairly conservative and reactionary outlook from many (albeit not all) of the people who post on here. The (perceived) rigid "Advanced Driving" rules are treated as commandments by many.
Many threads descend into hair-splitting pedantry and drag on for months in that way.
I'm, for one, am interested in driving and riding beyond that of the first edition of Roadcraft.

I'll start some new discussions in the coming weeks and see if we can invigorate the forum a bit.
