IMHO, it's very much easier to judge a 2-second gap than some distance along the road which you first have to calculate.
Only if you can count to two. Which, going by the need to start this thread, might be a bit of an assumption.
If you can't count to two then you just might have a wee bit of difficulty calculating the distance, wouldn't you say?
Indeed. You might have to start a thread asking how to do it.
Patronising idiots! If someone asks a question, answer it. Who are any of you to judge and poke fun at anybody else? You are nothing more than playground bullies who pick on kids who you know won't kick your arses.

try this. The next time someone laughs in your face after you asked a question about something you needed help understanding, just remember that your looking in a mirror.
Careful who you aim at before pulling the trigger. I wasn't poking fun at anybody.

I thought the OP asked a perfectly reasonable question.

I thought he whole idea of the "2 second rule" was to do away with the daft system of knowing how far we will travel at different speeds when we brake. So why try to "backwork" it?

OP, not a stupid question as some suggest. Just ignore ignorance, it is it's own reward. But why complicate a simple operation? Unless you want to know exactly why and how? Just count in seconds until you pass a stationary object the car in front of you has passed; less than 2 you are too close, more than 2 it doesn't matter. Works at speeds of 40mph and above.

I am the OP and the reason I asked the original question was so that I could build a scale model.

Counting to two when your working with 2.5cm doesn't quite work.

The positive answers on this post have helped me, thank you.

The other posts, I just found humorous.

Bizarre. What practical application would the answers have in your miniature world?

I want my miniature world to be safe.
Is that not okay?

The model is for educational purposes.

The model will clearly show the huge differences between 2 seconds at 20mph compared to 70mph.

I wanted accuracy in my model. Thus my original question.

I have already started my project. I will upload pictures when it's done.

Again thank you for your help smile

Got the picture now. Well done, nothing like a bird's eye view.
