I remember when I was doing driver training being surprised when my instructor told me that neither side has priority over the middle lane, and that both sides have have to check the lane is clear ahead before pulling out on to it. It does seem to cause a bit of debate however as it seems somewhat counterintuitive. Anyone got any views on this?

If I'm going to move into a lane where potentially there could be something coming the other way, I can assure you there is nothing counterintuitive about checking first; and that includes the bits where oncoming traffic should be on their own side of a solid white line. Met a few nasty surprises on this road over the years.

Not least is the "Safety Camera" van, or police with a radar gun, occasionally lurking in the layby up the road.
