There's a difference between cycle lanes with solid or broken lines separating them from the carriageway.

If the line was broken you were just being awkward IMO

You did the right thing, the people using a cycle lane with a solid line are breaking the law.

So which was it?

If I have got the correct section it is solid all the way. I still cross it to get past peopled waiting to turn right into Halfords who haven't moved over to the centre of the road. It is a fairly new cycle lane and they have taken out quite a few right turn filters to put it in which causes massive traffic problems. It is a long and straight road and so the "if a cyclist was there" argument is bullst.

What law are they breaking and what offence are they committing?

Nearside vision, offside vision, length of time and traffic conditions would all play a part in whether or not any driver could spot a cyclist on the road. I will often pick them up early, ahead of other vehicles, as they or I move out around parked vehicles or change direction due to the natural deviation of the road. I can't remember a time I reached a cyclist's back wheel and was surprised to see them there.
