I've been doing more and more trackdays and I was thinking about stepping things up a bit. Is a racing licence worth getting and if so how do you go about getting one?

Answers to all your questions can be found here, at the UK Motor Sports Association website - who manage this in the UK.

do you have an idea what you want to race and where? I think that the getting the licence bit is about the simplest piece of the puzzle!

Thinking about Lotus Elise series a client of mine is in one, but if you got any better ideas suggestions are always welcome. Something not mega bucks and uk based only, say 10 meets or less a year?

Anything the 750MC [http://www.750mc.co.uk/] do would probably be right up your street. It's all pretty much aimed at the budget end of motorsport. Again at the budget end, there are:

2CV's - http://www.2cvracing.org.uk/
XJS's - http://www.jagracing.co.uk/
205's or E30 BMW Rallying - http://www.205cup.com/
MR2's - http://www.mr2challenge.com/
MX-5 - http://www.max5racing.com/
Lotus Seven (or Caterfield etc) - http://tigerownersclub.co.uk/racing/racing.html
http://www.wscrda.co.uk/
http://www.caterhamracing.com/

I'm quite sure there are a few series that I have left out. You've also got Sprinting and Hillclimbing to look at.

Far be it for me to go against the grain here, but have you ever considered rallying?
Can be done on tarmac only.
I've always said, in rallying, you usually only have your own "accident" whereas in racing you can easily get involved in someone else's "accident".

I agree, hence me suggesting the 205/RWD cup. It is something I'd rather do as well. Not that I'd pass up the chance to do some circuit racing, however.

Mods - This might be better off in General Motorsport, I'm not sure it is really a Advanced Driving topic.
