I went on a couple of assesment drives but as they were on a sunday morning early this put me off doing any more and following through to the test as I love my sunday lie in too much!

shame really, why dont they do them later or is it just my local branch?

Not sure about the cars but with the Bikes, they have a General run on a Saturday morning and then you will arrange other assessment drives with your observer at times convieneint to both of you.

Traffic.

The 11-1 drives I had were noticeably a lot more frustrating than the 9-11.

Well worth the 1 Sunday in 4!

PS - I haven't been up after 8am for the last 3 weeks!

So you'd rather lie in bed than improve your driving?

Sounds like you're a bit of a driving god. Never mind.

Sunday morning does seem to be the IAM MO.

I'm sure they're lovely, sincere people.

Dangerous lunatics though - the ones with the 30yr badges tend to be all over the place.

I'm an IAM Qualified Observer and I, like you, would avoid mornings like the plague, I'm not a morning person!

Our group, as do most I know, arrange Observed Runs at a time convenient to the observer and the associate, my last associate and I used to go out during the afternoon on my days off.

Assessment drives are different to observed drives - which incidently are done at a time convenient to you.

That said, you can't be too serious about it if you're not prepared to sacrafice 4 or 5 sunday lie-ins; which incidently you would not need to, as I've just said on the opening line.

As for '30-year old' badges rolleyes My observer was one of these, and a 'crusty', but my opinion changed when he took me on a demo run in his Cosworth - I still recall that run so fondly.

Plus I'd be interested to know what facts you have to back that up.

Some Groups do fixed sessions (Sunday morning usually?) - other Groups allocate an Observer and you go out at mutually agreeable times.
Try telling them you work shifts and need an Observer allocated - see if that works.....

You expecting video?

Maybe it's just the 'look at my badge' types of old duffer gone to seed. You don't see them much any more - perhaps the IAM demographic has changed for the better.

The IAM, it's Groups and Observers are as varied as the Populous.
There will be an Observer on your wavelength.
Just accept that to reach the standard, a certain approach is needed.
After that, feel free to put your interpretation on what you have learnt.
Others here do.

You're not getting defensive just because some (can't remember saying all of them. But people read what they want to read, eh?) of the polished badges have demonstrated poor driving in front of me, are you?

It just seems a very poor advert for the organisation.

Does seem to have rattled the cage of Major Outrage from Tunbridge Wells though.

They asked me to become an observer when I did it. Not because i'm an amazing driver or anything but because I'm 28, and they are sorely in need of some younger people.

I just couldnt agree to giving up so many Sunday mornings. If I had agreed to it, all I would have done is let them down time and again. Best to say no.

Shame, but it was hard enough to make all my runs, let alone every sunday from now until armageddon!

Our group will assign an observer to you that can be available when you (the associate) are.

My local group does one Sunday a month from 9am - this was fine for me despite the negative impact on my golf handicap and on my Saturday night drinking hehe

No, doesn't bother me.
I can accept your observations, as I also observe those who have passed the DSA test exhibiting behaviour that would not have been appropriate on that test.
You see, we all find it easy to be a critic.
Me, I like to ask that critic, in whatever field, you could do better, go and prove it.

My IAM group leaves it for the Associate and the Observer to agree venues & times to suit themselves - weekday or weekend, matters not. It works and everyone happy.
