My IAM group leaves it for the Associate and the Observer to agree venues & times to suit themselves - weekday or weekend, matters not. It works and everyone happy.
Same here. My observer & I just fitted in the runs to suit us both. We used early evenings, Saturday afternoons and late Sunday mornings during May & June as that suited us both. My 'test' run started at 1pm on a Saturday.

my local group has theory sessions on thursday evenings at 7:30pm and drives the following saturday morning at 10am for the duration of the twice-yearly 8-week course, any deviation from that can be arranged on a case-by-case basis, any time required after the course has finished is mutually agreed between the allocated observer and his or her associate. we generally allocate different observers every week to associates too, which i'm led to believe is not the norm?

i also understand that the new IAM YDN (young driver network) lessons will be exclusively on a one-to-one basis with no group-based theory lessons or weekly drives

I'm lead to believe that a number of IAM groups swap their Observers over for each run - it's obviously a workable solution but personally I like the idea of a permanent Observer allocation for the duration of the training - it just seems to be a more personalised approach. However, I do concede that an Associate may benefit from the wider spread of info that could come his/her way from using a different Observer for each run. As usual, it's horses for courses.
