It would also be fair to say that my approach to learning was not compatible with the Observer's method of coaching, so I'll share the blame with him.

Best wishes all,
Dave - a bit of a tricky bu99er at times. yes
Reading your posts with reference to the IAM I am tempted to rejoin and to once again be an Observer, with the aim of having you as an Associate.
Me, I'm very flexible and patient.
A teaching qualification helps. By which I mean I understand that student and teacher are both in a learning situation.
The best teachers never assume they know all.

Whose Generation, I was thinking that if allocated Dave as an Associate one would first have to work out whether and what Dave wanted to learn.

Dave, did you want to learn? Or did you want to persuade either yourself, or the observer, that there was nothing worth learning? Which, since you have thoroughly enjoyed your style of driving and have apparently used it safely for many years, may well be the case.

yes I very much agree with that last bit, so thank you for making that point.

As for having me as an Associate, you must be a bit of a masochist!

....but if you fancy meeting up informally sometime by all means let me know, and that'll be fine by me.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I would say rather than wanting to learn, it was more a matter of seeing what was on offer, with a view to adopting things that seemed helpful in cases where my current style revealed appreciable shortcomings when subjected to expert scrutiny.

It was never a question of seeking to convince anybody that there was nothing worth learning; that really would be a bad attitude to take. As I've often said before, I've always enjoyed driving and I have maintained a strong interest in the subject, though I'm obviously not as sharply focussed on it as some people appear to be, but we all differ in that respect and I'm not criticising the perfectionists.

Some people appear to be seeking perfection in every detail - which I feel might be regarded as a fruitless exercise because we don't even know what perfection is; well OK, I don't. I'm happy with trying to achieve a good result, a reliable result, but on a fairly free and easy basis - though I appreciate that will look sloppy to the more committed enthusiasts.

My preference is still for treating it as an evolving and refining process, as I certainly don't want to upset what I've already got - whatever that may be. I hope that helps.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Thanks for the reply, Dave. It sounds like you have a very good attitude. As you yourself have questioned, whether your approach is sufficiently 'compliant' to join the IAM 'club' is quite another question - and, it would appear, not an important one for you.

I think that last bit is right, Mark. Too much of a disruptive influence. wink

No worry, we can progress by other means.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

I will take you up on that invitation, probably about six weeks time.
We are not so far apart in age, so I suspect our stories about our youth will be very similar.
Expect a PM.
Meanwhile, keep on trucking.

OK, glad you're interested in meeting up. I'll look forward to that.

Best wishes all,
Dave.
