Just drove home through the thickest fog ive ever driven in.
Visibility was down to one or two car lengths.

I just went very slowly (15mph) but it still felt very dangerous, parked cars were hard to spot untill I was right on top of them.
I saw several cars going much faster than me, seemed crazy.

Any tips for driving in thick fog?

Im not sure what I would have done had this been on the motorway. Probably go slowly untill the next junction and park up somewhere safe.

Just the obvious really. Make sure your windscreen is clean, not just on the outside but the inside as well and that all lights are also clean. Keep the demister on and use the wipers occasionally to ensure you're not getting moisture deposited on the screen.

In really thick fog, if you have front fogs you might find you see more with just the fog lights on. Even dipped headlights will tend to throw light upwards which reflects back off the fog and reduces your visibility. (On the other hand, they make you more visible to oncoming traffic so you might prefer to keep headlights on.)

And, of course, go as slowly as you must to ensure you can stop in the distance you can see. Don't be tempted to follow faster cars that obviously have radar fitted and avoid the tendency to lock on to red tail or fog lights. When you're following another vehicle, the fog is dispersed and seems much less dense so that you can be fooled into thinking it's not as bad as you thought. Fact is, however, that the vehicle at the front of the line which is setting the pace is effectively driving blind with everyone else tucked up behind. Not a good position to be in!

Basically, just accept it's going to take a long time to get home!

Find a truck that is travelling at the speed you want to do then follow him at the threshold of your vision, If there is something blocking the road he will hit it first, If it stops him dead you should still have enough time to stop.
If this does happen for christ sake don't come to stop behind him, take to the hard shoulder and stop along side him, someone further back can run into him then.

thats about what i do. its surprising how much water gets on your screen in fog. i find on the bike i have to wipe my visor every 100yrds or so in anything above mist. not owned a car for a bit but seem to remember its as bad.
