Driving back from Sainsburies on a 50 limit DC.

Big white van in outside lane doing 40ish. Pulls over after he passes some traffic he was overtaking. I pass him, noticing that he's now sped up.

Up ahead is a Mondaygo, looking like he's about to pass about 4 cars at 50mph.

Inexplicably he then eases off the gas down to 40 in the OSL, and then fails to either pull over or resume his pace.

Next thing I know is that I have Mr White Van man trying to polish my tailpipes with his ford badge behind me. Numpty in front won't pull over, WVM won't extricate himself from my boot lid.

What would the advanced driver do in such a circumstance? (I hadn't tailgated or flashed anyone at any point). I won't say what I did right now (though you could have a guess...) wink

Personally: move over to lane 1, drop back behind WVM (staying in lane 1). Open up biggest gap I can, let them sort it out.

I guess I couldn't say what I would have done without knowing exactly how tightly packed the cars were, road conditions, aggressiveness of other drivers, etc.

Moving to lane 1 - if that can be done without upsetting the applecart further - would seem wise. Equally, take a view as to how long the existing situation is likely to continue, as it may resolve itself soon, before deciding to shuffle the pack somehow. Three cars traveling in close convoy at speed are not dangerous in that steady state (not that you want to be in that state on the public road) - it is when someone makes a move (by touching their brake to make a tailgater back off, by slowing down, by speeding up, by changing lane, perhaps even by beeping/flashing lights) that problems may develop.

Move to lane one and undertake. I would, once I'd tried to coax said Mondeo into the inside lane with a bit of right indication and perhaps a friendly flash, and then satisfied myself that a) the driver was unlikely to move to lane one, and that b) there was a bit of spare room with which to take evasive action should he wake up.

God knows. Anyway, I dealt with the situation as best I could.

I wish it was legal to carry a gun though....
