Whilst this is obviously textbook, I find that the obverse construction is shorter and more helpful in pointing out the importance of lateral hazards:-"...the nearest place a surprise can come from"
Whilst I understand that "& reasonably expect..." covers lateral emergences into the path, I think the most common fault I see in dense urban driving is going too fast on narrow straight roads (with parked cars either side).
