I am 19, and considering doing IAM, to improve my driving ability, but mainly to decrease my £1350 insurance quote...

Does anyone have any direct experince of IAM and insurance prices? Does it actually make that much difference? (Im most likley going to be going with direct line)

If its going to cost me 5-£600 to get the IAM, then I would imagine that its not going to save me anywhere near that much on the insurance...

Anyone know?

Woah!

It's currently £85 for Skill for Life (this includes everything, except your petrol). Under 25 and you'll get £10-20 off that too.

From Feb. it's going up to £99, but still with £20 off.

Don't expect too much if any discount off insurance. The "new" IAM Surety policies expect you to have 4 years no claims.

But for 65 quid and a few hours of your time, it's well worth doing.

The main saving on your insurance is due ot the fact that you are far less likely to have an accident and hence protect your no-claims. I did for that reason, if I lost my NCB or had any sort of claim I would no longer be able to insure the car I have.

I saved about 13% off my insurance last year. I had maximum no claims (insured), no penalty points or convictions. Passing your IAM doesn't mean you won't have an accident though. I had my first claim in 15 years 18 months ago, six months after passing the course.

At our local IAM group meeting last night a member complained to me that the "new" IAM Surety insurance refused to insure him because he is considered too old at 80 - that must affect a fair proportion of IAM members!

It may be that some insurers will give cheaper insurance for IAM. However, they are not that likely to be giving the best quote for your circumstances so you are unlikely to reap the benefit. Unfortunately I suspect there are no stats around that would satisfy the actuaries that IAM drivers are substantially safer.

I mention it every year. The fee(s) don't seem to come down, however some companies have been pleased when it has been mentioned and I agree with a previous poster that you are probably more likely to get a quote if your younger etc.
