Under 17 Car Club
Discussion
I did instructor training (well re-training in my case) a couple of weeks ago and hope to do some instruction again this year. Just depends on their being free weekend time. It was fantastic being back and enjoying the great driving. The new CI seems a top chap too, so all bodes well. Also looking forward to taking something fun along to Magic day too this year!

I was a member from the age of 14 to 17 - seems like a long time ago now! Loved it, but sadly due to my parents work commitments we couldn't go as regularly as other people. Did my theory test on my 17th birthday, booked a test on the same day and passed first time four weeks later with 2 minors (for hesitation!). My brother got a cancellation and passed within 4 days of his birthday.
Both my parents cars were Auto so they had to buy a manual for us to go (12 year old XR3i from a friend of the family for £600) so we probably looked like hillbilly's 4 of us turning up in a creaking 3 door Ford. My brother went to one of the Automatic days, which I was never able to go to, and took the 750iL that my dad had at the time
Had a great time and its a fantastic organisation.
Seems timely to "bump" this thread as we are nearing Christmas and moving in to another year.
The Club has access to some incredible venues - including Bovington Tank Grounds, Castle Combe Circuit, Devon's Driving Centre, the Transport Research Laboratory, as well as Long Marston and North Weald Airfields. In 2012 we have meetings every weekend from February 19th through to November 11th, with the exception of Easter Sunday, and three weeks "Summer Holiday" for the Olympics (not all Members can attend all venues as some are restricted to certain Grades).
There is loads more information about the Club on the website - www.under17-carclub.co.uk. We hope to see some more PistonHeads Juniors next year?

Firstly there seems to be no link in the "Advanced Driver Links" section, so how does one get added.
Secondly hidden away in advanced driving this is largely preaching to the converted. If this sort of training cuts the nomber of 17-25 KSIs surely it should have a permanent place in General Gassing.

Sadly theres nothing you can do about your kid driving fast when he passes his test. Obviously not everyones like it but most young drivers are gonna be blasting it around everywhere they go full pelt. Thats just how it is. This AD courses should be mandatory, infact I personally think that they should just teach this straight away as most of what i learned in my lessons has been completely forgotten now.

Welcome to 2013 & so time for a review of 2012.
Eldest son started the year as a Grade 4. We've visited Castle Combe, & Long Marston & a new venue, Bovington in Dorset, so covered some miles in the old war horse. He got Grade 3, which has brought up his confidence level &, thanks to the generosity of the club, he's driven 3 or 4 different vehicles each time out, ranging from a Meriva, an MX5 Hard Top, lots of Fords, an S2000 to Range Rovers, Disco's, & a 7 1/2 ton truck. He also won a raffle prize of a passenger ride in a McLaren MP4-12C, which I'm insanely jealous of...he's been around (& around!) the skid pan at Castle Combe & spent a day with the 4X4's at Whitecliffe. Magic Day was superb, some fantastic cars & throughout the year the club raised a lot of money for http://www.teenagecancertrust.org/
All in all a fantastic year, really hoping next year is as good & hopefully we'll see Kinky Junior at Combe in mid February!

Just bumping this to add...January 2015 & eldest has a full licence first go, with 3 minors! He's over the moon, & all down to the dedication of the Under 17 Car Club team, & his "on the road instructor", Judy, who was very surprised at how little she needed to do - which speaks volumes about how good the club is. On to son #2 in February then...

My son did the week long course in October half term holiday. It cost me a week from work but was well worth it.
First turn of the keys to an AC Cobra in 5 days. He is now looking in to junctions and bends from the passenger seat.
Pleased that your son has taken learnings away from the Pathfinder course - great to hear positive stories about it! (I'm Rob, who you may remember from the week.)First turn of the keys to an AC Cobra in 5 days. He is now looking in to junctions and bends from the passenger seat.
