Without using the word “onus” again, if you call yourself an advanced driver, after considering your own safety first, (you must never sacrifice your own safety for any other consideration), you may well then ask how can I help other road users by applying my road sense? Motorway driving is just one example of many.
No disagreement there.

I will always give way to them when they're indicating away from their bus stop, however at junctions I tend not to, I don't want someone going into the back of my car just so that the public transport runs slightly more efficiently.

I have noticed whilst visiting friends in Sussex, there are a very large number of busses which pull in to drop off and pick up passengers and as soon as they stop and open the doors, they indicate to pull out then sit there with the right hand indicator running until they have allowed their passengers to get on the bus or to make their exit and only then do they drive off.

And they like to call themselves professional drivers.... Yeah, right!!

I've never spoken to a Sussex bus driver so I've no idea what they like to call themselves?
Clearly, you have, so why didn't you ask them about their behaviour?

When I was doing my D PSV/PCV training there was a situation on a dual carriageway were I needed to move in to lane 2, to pass a tractor in lane 1.
My trainer said to me you can put your signal on but its unlikely that anybody will let you out. I put my signal and got ready to accelerate and move in to lane 2. He was right 4 or 5 cars flew past without letting me in. He then said 'Count another 3 cars past then show the 4th car how big this coach is'.
It worked. 4th car let me in to lane 2. I just edged across a little as car 4 was approaching and he kindly flashed me.
