V70 auto gearbox problem
Discussion
Ive just picked up a cracker of a p2 v70 with 67k miles. Ive just changed all discs and pads, oil and filter and now I am going to perform the gibbons flush to renew the tranny fluid as a precation.
With ref to the AW box being made of chocolate, surely thats a bit harsh - all the failures are well past 150k miles and thats hardly low miles. If I want to avoid probs later in its life will regular flushes halt the onset of 'issues'?

I did exactly that but only used 10 litres, that cleaned the fluid up no end. You can get it off Ebay for £10/litres, search for mobil 3309 (I think).
Mine is still not quite right though. It bangs when changing down from 2 to 1 when slowing to a stop. But, only does it when fully warmed up and sometimes not at all.
I'm living with it. Mines on 130k miles btw (V70 D5).
Sounds like the answer is to do it again with the full 20 litres. Why skimp?Mine is still not quite right though. It bangs when changing down from 2 to 1 when slowing to a stop. But, only does it when fully warmed up and sometimes not at all.

You will get some sort of contribution from Volvo as it is FVSH, but it will still be painful.
Quite surprising on a 2008 car, especially with only 45k miles.
Id wager the Volvo contribution will be around 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost.
Good luck getting it sorted.
I've asked them to look into this, cheers. Quite surprising on a 2008 car, especially with only 45k miles.

Which box would likely be in a 98 V70 T5? The same chocolate one?
A '98 will most likely have the earlier 4-speed - you can tell from the gear selector. They're generally fine. The last of the Mk 1 V70's (99 & 00) did have the 5-speed gearbox and engine setup from the 00-07 V70 but, for some reason, don't seem quite as troublesome as in the later model. No logical reason why.The pre-99's with 4-speed gearbox and mechanical rather than electronic throttle are probably less potentially troublesome overall.

which of the 3 are most reliable and cheapest to run?
Get a good one and Volvo will be the way to go.Clutches for them are about £1100 but can last over 130k miles, even when abused.
Pre-2005 cars have a few expensive electrical gremlins but aren't all bad.
My V70 has 212k miles on it, was a police car, has been tuned and will keep up with an E46 M3.
We're talking about 3 different gearboxes here:
850/V70/S70/C70 up to 1998: 4-speed Aisin Warner AW50-42
1999-2000 old shape V70: 5-speed Aisin Warner AW50/51-55
2000-2005 newer shape V70: 5-speed AW50/51-55
2006-2007 newer shape V70: 6-speed Aisin Warner TF60
2008-2014 new V70: 6-speed TF60
2014 on models with new 4-cylinder Volvo engine should have a new 8-speed gearbox.
By far and away the most troublesome are 2000 to 2002 model year AW50/51 gearboxes in the newer (2000-2007) S60/V70/S80.
In addition the 6-cylinder 2.9/T6 S80 models used a 4-speed GM gearbox which is totally hopeless.

So phase 1 of oil change completed
I just disconnected the top oil cooler pipe and connected 2 pieces of 12.5mm clear pipe 3 foot long, one slips onto the hose and the other i made an adapter to go over the radiator stub.
Some cars it flows out the hose others out the radiator. Mine flows out the hose so i put that in 2l bottle and ran the engine till i saw bubbles (got about 2.5l out) then topped up 1l via other hose ran till 1l came out and repeated that 5 times then topped up and put hose back on
Will drive it for a while to hopefully free up more old oil before repating the above.
This process is definitely worth doing

Can we tempt 172 back to report on his flush?
I gave my 99 P80 V70 2.4 5 speed AW a partial flush two years ago. No problem before but at nearly 20 years in use it seemed like a good plan. Drained from the bottom plug and refilled through the dipstick.
Now it is nearly at 90k miles but still performs nicely.
Fab car. Needs an aircon refill every season, but KwikFit couldn’t find a leak. EBay £20 can solves that.
Best £400 I’ve ever spent.
