On our Saab 9-5 that was a sure sign that the attitude sensor had failed. I would guess similar, although I've not noticed it on Volvo Forum.

I must admit, I'm missing mine.

I had a tired 163bhp manual followed by an ill advised 185bhp Geartronic which lasted a mere few weeks begore i got all nostalgic and bought an 850 T5, which is lovely and great fun but doing 50 miles a day, on a motorway in crap weather... I fund myself thinking that the old diesel V70's were unbeatable for such tasks plus the general day in, day out family / lifestyle demands. In turn I also find myself browsing the classifieds regularly.

If a tidy 163bhp manual popped up in the right colour combo, I think I'd struggle to not jump back in again. Not the most dynamic of catsuit fabulous tools.

Anybody in the market for an 850?
Despite my best efforts, the inevitable is looking like it's going to happen. I've taken a deposit on my old 850 T5 and headed south on Friday to look at / buy another V70 D5.

The 850 is great, properly usable retro quick estate but ever increasing mileage and the fact I'm using as 'just an estate car' and with little time to fettle or enjoy it, it's just frustrating so it has to go to somebody who can appreciate it and give it the TLC it deserves.

I had a word with myself, drew up a list if what I really need rather than what I think I need and it came down to a big, comfy estate that does decent MPG and still looks OK but equally, not something I'll be awarded to use and abuse. Only one logical answer really.

I did debate an early XC70 but finding a manual is hard and rest assured, most will gave AWD failure and also looked at a couple of pre-facelifts but they just don't appeal as much as a facelift. But also wanted a 163bhp, manual, black interior and a non-wishy washy colour.

So, I've managed to find one that ticks all the boxes though it had intergalactic miles but on paper, seems a good un. Even if it turns out not to be, I'll no doubt buy it anyway... my interest in trailing about the country looking for an old shed money V70 is minimal!

What could possibly go wrong...

Just out of interest was your T-5 the very blue one thats been advertised recently..??

I'm still on the hunt for a T5-R or R at some point although values seem all over the place. Sadly, I moved my V70 D5 manual 163 on a few weeks ago and really miss it...!!

We run both manual and automatic 163s. I think the auto is better tbh, with the caveat that you get one that isn't knackered.

Similarly, you're right, all early 4wd will fail at the splined coupling at some point, but those that have been repaired with the modified sleeve will be good as gold forever.

Correct, they’re just kerbed to buggery to give that split rim look.

Morning,

Yes it is, blue on blue on blue on blue with some added blue.

Nice car, drives well but just too nice, too old and too thirsty to use it as I am these days and with no option to retire it to third car / weekend duties... it's just frustrating me that i can't, sadly.

R prices have gone a bit mad of late but I can't but help think supply outweighs demand. Lots of imports, some dubious, now coming in but I'm not convinced there's a strong enough market for old Volvos at nigh on five figures.

I've had a few but that was back when they were barely four figures, in fact the most I ever paid for a good one was £1250 but again if we knew then what we know now...

As for the auto debate, I've had a few over the years and I just don't like them. I don't like the fact all developed issues or that they sound like the clutch is slipping all the time and the back to front manual shift is just illogical and annoying. It's old tech and I hate it. The basic auto in the old P80 cars is far better I think.

Deed is done.

Trip south last night and home with another V70 D5. A 2005 facelift with the 163bhp and 5spd manual, with black leather and a decent paint colour... which is pretty much what I was looking for.

Despite its intergalactic miles (1/4 million approaching fast!) it's surprisingly good. It'll need the usual fettling - EGR / intake clean, fresh filters and fluids, geometry and some good tyres plus it's got a scabby wing but another sourced already and the drivers seat stitching is splitting but that's it.

Drove very well home, barely used fuel and reminded me just how comfy and planted these things are. It was shed money but that's all I want... something to do miles in, chuck stuff in and generally not worry about.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing, it doesn't suffer the usual rear end side hop over crap surfaces... witchcraft I tell thee!

Hi All,
Now in the market for a large Automatic estate and of course the V70 is on the radar.Looking to spend up to 3K ( if need be) but pref less as it’s a bit of an experiment to see if it does the job for work.
I’ve driven a couple ( both with circa 120k miles) a 54 plate 2.4 petrol, had “the clunk”from 3rd to 4th and not as described, and an 08 facelift 163D5 which I was hoping to like bit the low speed diesel clatter killed it for me! ( nice enough when cruising though ).
There’s one particular car that is looking promising 02 2.4 petrol,Auto nice colour, all history and the chap has rebushed the rear subframe/engine stabilisers etc etc. He also did a “ partial” gearbox oil change last year, but need to confirm what’s partial”. Belts due for the second time prob in 12 months ish.
Could someone kindly point out what is the normal auto and when the Geartronic came in ( which seems to have more issues) and how many speeds they have?
I’d probably like one with a bit more modern tech fir daily work but putting Bluetooth and sat nav on my phone will suffice.
So.. how to value ? Webuyanycar have it at £700 which is relevant, the owner had got it up at over 3 times that (but it’s probably better than many newer ones and I don’t mind paying overs at this price point).
I’m thinking circa £1500 or a tad more ?
Ta in advance
