Hi All

My 02 S60 D5 has had a new clutch/flywheel recently and as part of the job the garage had to move the steering rack, hence draining the fluid.
I have just noticed it has been filled with the standard red stuff rather than the Volvo spec green (eg Pantasin CHF 11S).
I am having the rack drained/flushed and refilled with the proper stuff tomorrow.
My concern is that for about 3 months or so it has been running around with the wrong fluid and my understanding is that this can, over time, damage the seals in the rack.

Do you think I`ll be ok given that it`s not been in long?

No signs of a leak on the system as far as I can see other than the usual leaky reservoir cap (now replaced) and steering feels perfectly fine/smooth.

Any advice appreciated as I am a little worried!
Thanks.

I'd say its pretty unlikely to have caused any damage - chances are they've put volvo compatible Dexron IIE in it which is designed for late 90's or earlier cars - I think they switched about 99/2000 to Pentosin but I very much doubt it would cause issues but don't hold me to that!

Mine's a C70 and the manual says to use DexIII. However they changed the power steering pump and reservoir about '99 and switched to Pentosin. Mine was filled with Dexron when I got it and I just topped it up with that as I assumed (wrongly) that that was the right fluid. Anyway, my fluid reservoir started to leak and I realised that the fluid was the wrong one. Replced the reservoir, drained and flushed the system and it's fine now.
The reservoir had blown up and the seals in that had gone but, touch wood, the rack is fine. That was from at least a year of using the wrong fluid though. I imagine you will be fine after three months but keep an eye on the fluid levels.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
It`s all sorted now, correct fluid in it.

They gave the rack a thorough inspection and could see no signs of leakage or play in it.
