Wow. Stunning. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I am still on the look out for one of these beasts as the one I was going to look at has been sold.
If anybody knows of one please let me know.

Thanks

As mentioned there is a guy in birmingham stock piling them (one with the low mileage yellow estate) but he is dodgy as fk, will lie to you about how good a condition it is in and is difficult to deal with. He can be found on car and classic - Trouble with most T5Rs these days is you'll buy it and because of the age and mileage it will undoubtedly require work and re-commissioning to make it nice

Looks like the prices of T5r and 850R have gone up a few K since this thread started. That's if you can even find a descent one for sale!

Thread revive

I do chuckle at comments of buying a T5 and adding bits to it to make it look like a T5-R or R, really what is the point, if you can find an R bumper that isn't battered beyond repair then this will swallow £300, plus paint on top, if you can find a set of T5-R, R, wheels that aren't bent buckled or battered then be prepared to pay firm money for them, if you want to go the whole hog and replace the interior of a T5, then again good luck finding a complete interior.

All this when you could have saved a little bit more a purchased an actual T5-R, or R, but hey you could always nip down to Halfords any by and "R" badge and stick it on the pack for £3

And btw change the bloody 280mm brakes to at least the 302s!!

I'm running Porsche brakes on ours now.

To be fair in the cold light of day, the R was really just a trim level over an above the t5...... 17" wheels, lowered springs, part alcantara trim and overboost giving 15hp on the standard motor which was later made standard on on newer t5s anyway.

The t5r was all about the percieved image at the time with BTCC, the cars themselves wernt much different or indeed any better then the standard t5s.

A GUL t5r might have some value just because of the sentiment but the later R's are just trim level fodder really, front spoiler or not.

I really can't agree with with you about trim level fodder, you also forgot bigger RARB just for info

I'm pretty sure that my independent insurance valuation of our R value at it at 6.5k, a standard T5 wouldn't never fetch as much as a T5-R or an R, I'm in the camp of loving both, I know however there are divisions in the owners community between the R and the T5-R, I much prefer the R seats over the T5-R seats though.

Also find me a standard T5 that hasn't been abused. Some idiot sticking on a MBC in the vein hope it goes quicker

So you are also baically saying that a T5-R is also trim level fodder over a standard T5, when they only did a limited run of numbers in a few colours, the R it has to be said was an unlimited run but the guys who had in the previously year or so spanked 30k plus on a T5-R were hardly going to splash out again for minimal changes, so volvo sold far less R's than they anticipated

Also find me a standard T5 that hasn't been abused. Some idiot sticking on a MBC in the vein hope it goes quicker, i know all cars can be abused, but the affordable T5 in unabused form is a rare beast, smokey turbo, blown rear main the usual rubbish, the guys who rather wind the boost up and not maintain the car properly and do a stage 0

Values for decent T-5R and 850R seem to be all over the place at the moment, several low mileage Japanese import T-5R's in "that yellow" seem to have gone for strong money.

I'm wondering about this as I have an 850R and wish to either switch it onto an agreed value policy (currently Elephant will give me £500 for it), or possibly sell it.

How, short of actually selling it, to establish what it's worth?

180,000 miles, engine fully rebuilt 20,000 of those ago with a ported head, H-beam rods, back-cut valves etc.

The car has had what I'd term sympathetic upgrades - AP made a big brake kit for these cars which it has, it's got the R manifold, year old 20T turbo, full Ferrita downpipes/100 cell cat/cat-back system and is breathing through a custom MAF, enlarged throttle body and uprated Intercooler.

Suspension wise that's all new, Koni yellows at the front and year old Nivo's at the rear.

So it stops, turns, and will go - depending on the dyno you favour you'll see 350-370 bhp.

Within the last couple of weeks I changed the windscreen, all seals, and had a major service done with all belts, fluids and filters.

= It's worth more than the £500 I'd get if it got T-boned, I believe.

^^ That is stunning ^^ I'm inclined to say thats worth £7k + at the moment (to the right person) - they seem to be heading up at the moment.

With plenty of articles being written about them and Volvos new popularity - they are deffo on the rise

The red 850R is very nice.

I've had a few R models over the years, more prolifically being a green 850R auto estate bought about 5 years ago when prices seemed to have dipped... if I remember correctly, I paid around a grand and it was a rather nice example. It went and I then bought a restoration case T5-R in yellow and again an estate but the holy grail manual. I coaxed it back in to life and ran it daily up until a couple of years ago when I accepted it would take a fortune to "restore" and I wasn't interested, plus they'd become a bit... hmmm... so it went for reasonable money and the new owner has since spent said fortune on it. Then came a V70R estate, Saffron and auto and I just hated it so it too was moved on and finally came a sensibly modified 850 T5, estate and manual which was actually the nicest of the all to own... but I'd just got fed up with old cars and their lack of refinement and equipment.

Had I kept them all, I'd probably been sitting on a few quid given their prices, as with many 90#s performance cars, have started to climb... there's also a Cavalier Turbo for sale for £10k, ironically just sold one of those recently too.

I'd like a tidy 850 but they're no longer daily drivers, not decent ones anyway.

O/T but I loved the 850 in BTCC, I was there at Thruxton to see the debut of the estate, it was so funny to see it coming charging into the corner we were spectating at. Love the anecdote about the stuffed collie! smile

It's now advertised for 8k - which means one of two things:

1. No one will call
2. It'll sell in a couple of weeks, then the 850R will rapidly pass £50k for even a tatty one

Sorry, perhaps poor wording on my part.

Yes they can be daily drivers but I guess it depends on your situation... I've had numerous 850 / V70 T5's over the years and the rougher ones were fine for running about but the nicer ones were getting harder to keep in good order and not become a bit of a chore. Silly things like cracking alloys on potholes, air con issues, general noise and manners. Yes, all part and parcel of an older car but mine got to the stage where I didn't want to take them to Tesco or drive them in winter, thus became a bit impractical. That said, have V70 T5 and I don't care about it, it's a bit tired and sheddy now... but I just run it to work and back. Would be a crying shame to run a very nice R daily and risk it being ruined, but fair play to those who do.

Mine was withdrawn from general use a while back - you can see from the MOT history when that happened as the annual mileage halved.

I now drive the 911 more often, take the Volvo only when I need the space.
