I want a small car to replace Mrs V's Corsa. I've checked a 1.6D at a local car supermarket for fitment of the Vikingettes in the rear and it's fine. Boot is OK for weekends away. Not driven one though. Has to be petrol as it will equally do 3 mile runs through town in traffic.

Would it make a comfortable Tourer? Or is the suspension as harsh as boogery? Is the NVH OK? I'm erring towards the T5 for Jeremy-Clarkson-POWWWWWEEEER with the bonus that (on paper) the T5 is lower emissions than the 2.4. Thoughts?

I had a T5, but test drove the 2.4. Get the T5 - it's a stonker of an engine, although be aware that the fuel consumption, even if you've got a feather right foot, is high.

I had the dynamic package (lowered slightly) and 17 inch summers, and apart from the Continental tyres being awful for tram-lining, the ride was fine. And the seats are sublime. Overall comfort far better than the 1-series or A3s I've been in. And the interior, whatever people think, is far nicer and cleaner than the German rivals.

The boot space is limited and has a high entry, but we fit a big pram in there without many problems (albeit without much else) - fine for a weekend trip, though.

In the nearly 4 years we had it, nothing went wrong - not a thing. And when I was sideswiped on the Autobahn by a Matiz at relatively high speed, the side of the Matiz was wrecked, whereas I had a slightly broken wing mirror (though glass intact and electronics all working, including the folding) and scuffed bumper and wing.

We were reluctant to let it go, but the second kid made it necessary.

If you need any other advice, just ask.

It's a focus ST with a different body shell and a quality interior. Nowt more to add than what's already been written above. smile

Thanks chaps.

I'm looking for a Geartronic T5 which seem to be rare but I'm happy to wait until the right car shows. Fuel consumption at 30.1mpg combined manufacturers figures is OK. I'm expecting low 20's.

The main use of the car will be school runs and gym squad. Most weekends we head towards the coast (90-120 mile round trip) to mess around. The boot is high but adequate for our needs. As an example we use our Mitsubishi i-Car or Corsa sometimes for trips to the coast and both are absolutely fine, comfortable and the boot is OK.

Thanks Cupra R. I've already seen that one on Autotrader. The main problem is that the car is 372 miles from me (and Autotrader tend to give out mileages as the crow flies). I may dither yet.

There's a nice manual T5 4 miles from me: http://www.williamssalesltd.co.uk/used/volvo/c30/t... and probably over 372 miles from you! biggrin I've checked and driven this car and it is A1, good premium tyres and decent tread.

I have an '09 T5 R Design.

Pros:
Its a great looking, quality feel car with a premium interior and lacking the chav boy image of the Focus ST, and cheaper than a Golf GTI or one of the fast Audi A3s of similar age.
Comfortable seats.
The T5 engine is indeed a stonker, even standard it gives great acceleration and sounds wonderful. 260bhp is but a remap away, which turns it into a very quick car.
There are various tuning options now, what works on the ST also works on the C30 T5. Makes for a subtle Q car.

Cons:
It doesn't handle or steer like a Focus ST or Golf GTi.
I've changed the suspension to a Koni kit on mine (inc H&R springs) and while a vast improvement is still not a sharp B road weapon. Its a fast hatch - in the vein of bigger engined Audi A3s - rather than a grab-it-by-the-scruff hot hatch. Although still very appealing to drive and own.
So if you've had a Leon Cupra R you may be a little disappointed.
The glass hatch makes it a pain to load large items, and it has a high boot floor. The load cover thing is a faff to put in and out.
Although with the rear seats down you can actually fit a reasonable amount of stuff in it e.g. a bike with front wheel off.
But the rear hatch and space of a Focus is hugely more practical.
The clutch travel is long and takes a while to get used to.

I hope thats an honest appraisal. Just shout if you want to know anything else and refuse to drive a Focus ST even though its better wink
And enough of this 2.4 or geartronic nonsense, the T5 manual is the only one to have.

The T5 is a corker of an engine, really pokey and excellent reserves of torque for over taking, it's thirsty and the auto box blunts it a bit but it's a better prospect than the 2.4, far less power and hardly any better on gas, slug of an engine, no wonder Volvo discontinued it, you'd be better with the 2.0 frankly.

I love my T5 manual.
As said it's not the sharpest handling thing, feels quite heavy, but it is very comfy, makes a nice noise, isn't seen everywhere, and is certainly quick enough.
Averaging 30mpg over 1 year and 15,000 miles
What's gone wrong?.....nothing.
The boot is an anooying shape but I have had 2 bikes carefully placed inside with seats folded. I've never bothered with the parcel shelf.
Headlights aren't very bright.

Thanks for the information chaps. Much appreciated. Unfortunately the car has to be an automatic for Mrs V. If I wanted a manual I would have bought one by now but Geartronics are rare.

How thirsty is the T5? Considering i have one car which does 12-18mpg and the every day car does about 25mpg as both would go for the Volvo.

Mine regularly returns over 30 per tank..... a one year average of 31... I've had as low as 26 for a tank or up to 34 depending on mood/traffic/roads...
