I thinking of buying a V70 as a I require a car to take a bit of abuse of the next year or so whilst renovating/log collecting etc, looking around 2005/6. Looking to go manual. Probably going to do around 12k pa.

On my various searches, I see the main options to be 2.0T/2.5T or D5

Any opinions?

Steer clear of anything before 2005 as they have a few niggles and they're getting tired.

If fuel isn't a worry then go for the 2.4 T5 with a 6spd manual. The fastest/most powerful of the range and in terms of running costs, only a little more expensive than the other petrol versions.

Also, if it's gonna mainly be for abuse, Have a look at the ex-police cars, they can be had for half of your budget and will be no worse than something you buy off a forecourt.

If you really want to go posh, the newest ex-police D5 can be had for less than £10k at 3 years old... have a look here... http://expolicecar.co.uk/stockdetail.asp?id=334

Before the 2004/2005 facelift the clocks were a pain (and expensive), prior to 2003 the throttles and auto boxes were an expensive menace too.

Try to find a car with a clutch that's relatively new too. They last about 130k but they're £1100 to replace if you're doing it cheaply, a volvo dealer will charge in excess of £2500.

Last year we bought a 53 plate V70 2.5T AWD with, it would appear, every single option available with just 80K on the clock. It really is a very nice place to be. I'm assuming the clocks have been done as they have silver bezels?

It's fantastic, goes like stink (for such a heavy car) and makes a lovely noise when you boot it. It does, however, like a drink. Our average mpg so far has been 27-28mpg, which is down 4mpg from the previous 54 plate (facelift) V70 2,4 (170) auto we had.

Yep - looks like yours has a replacement DIM.

If you like the noise from the engine, take the soundproofing off the bonnet wink

Haha - I also like it to be whisper quiet (it's actually the OHs car). It just gives a nice throaty braaaap when you clog it.

With the same remit as you (cheap load lugger for a building renovation), I've just bought a late 2005 T5 - picking it up at the weekend.....didn't think I'd be able to get excited about a Volvo estate, but I cant wait to collect it! I'll be doing fewer miles than you though.

The way these are designed makes them a bit of a Jekyl and Hyde...

Mine has no soundproofing on the bonnet, a custom alloy intake and a stainless mesh air filter. All these add up to a lot of noise when you floor it. (Running a remap with 16-20 psi of boost makes the wooshie noises louder too wink ) but when you're just pottering about, it's smooth and quiet and the only extra noise is road noise from the harder suspension.

The 2005 onward T-5 has the brilliant 2.4L lump with 260 bhp as standard. £300 on a remap will see it clear 315bhp wink

Brake service required apparently. Pads and disks look and feel fine to me so won't be getting new ones yet.

For that amount of mileage a year I'd get the petrol hands down. I'd go for the 2.4 T5 got one myself and it's s great car. Ex plod aswell owned it myself for over two years and 50l miles spent barely anything on repairs.

If it is a 53 it is probably a 2004 model year. 2004 model year got most of the electrical and mechanical updates so have the new style clocks (plus different steering rack, suspension settings etc.). The 2005 model year is primarily a cosmetic update (inside and out) with not that many mechanical changes.

If you have the all-in-one integrated key it is a 2004 and has the new clocks which are a lot more reliable although if they do fail are not repairable.

It is a 2004 car - first reg 18/2/2004 and the key is the same as our previous 54 plate.

Another easy way to tell are the door mirrors.

Hinged at the bottom = electrical facelift

Hinged along the full length = pre-electrical facelift
The 2005 facelift saw the canbus speed doubled too but you wouldn't notice any difference unless you were doing work on the electrical system. The radios are supposed to be interchangeable on the facelift models without recoding them.

Ooh, I hope so - I've just bought a headunit to replace the blanking plate + double-din (older V40 perhaps) unit that's currently in mine. I was expecting problems....

Sorry, I mean what's in it currently has come out of an older Volvo I think, as it is fitted with an adaptor plate. Mine is a Dec 2005 V70 and I'm fitting an HU-650 headunit from a V70 of the same age.

Sorry, slightly off-topic! OP...buy a T5 wink
