Had to have my trusty steed recovered on a truck day before yesterday frown Just wondering if there are any known issues with V70 fuel pumps or if it's more likely to be crud in the tank / pump? are the pumps user serviceable?

I'd left it in a car park overnight, the car was on a slope that basically put all the fuel in the tank in the corner that the pump/sender sits in. The following day... would crank fine but absolutely no sign of firing. Mechanic came out, squirted easy start in the air box, it fired instantly, then died. Clearly not getting fuel. Recovered back to my house on truck, offloaded, for a laugh turned the key aaaannnd.... it started immediately. Used it for a quick run yesterday, got it home, now it won't start again.

First, get it plugged into the proper Volvo diagnostics and see what it throws-up.

It could be the fuel filter, sender or main pump.

Depending on the year and engine model, it could be a number of things to be honest.

okay ta, just for ref it's a 2001 2.4. It's now starting, but will only rev smoothly if you accelerate very very very slowly - put your foot down, it falters. Will try and find a mobile Volvo bloke with diagnostics

2001... hmmm... possibly the throttle module, they're well known for playing up. Fuel sender unit could also be the problem.

If you're near the dorset area, I have a generic code reader and the experience to know what the codes really mean (generic readers will give one explanation but it's not always the right one when it comes to Volvos).

Fuel pump relay is common as muck on them - does the fuel pump prime when put the ignition on - fuel pumps do go on them - they easy to replace - DIY job if you're relatively ok with spanners - access hole is under the boot floor replace the seal at the same time - but do check the relay first

Cheers for all the advice, took it apart yesterday and checked pump, senders, filters relay etc couldn't see anything wrong, fuel pump whirred nicely, but turns out there was a second hand pump down the road for £30 so bunged that in as a test and seems to have solved!

I have a similar problem when I park on a slope with nose down. If the fuel level is below a quarter then there is fuel starvation and it won't start. If I top up with a couple of litres the problem vanishes. Car is otherwise running sweetly. Is this a sign my fuel pump is on the way out? (V70 2.4 petrol 2002)

Could be low fuel pressure so maybe the pump or its seals are getting tired. Not sure on the V70 but on the old 240s they also had a pre pump that would lift the fuel from the tank - they were notorious for going and causing pretty flacid performance. The car would still run fine but performance would be reduced.

Buy a used pump and try swapping them over - as said already, very easy job to swap them
