Hello gents, new here! Dunno if anyone can help, i bought the mrs an S Max with the brilliant 2.5t 5 cyl petrol unit. The aux belt snapped and pulled the cam belt off which has damaged the engine irreparably. Seems that new engines are bloody £2k! Volvo use the same unit - I was wondering if anyone has experience of putting a volvo engine in a ford reasonably straightforwardly? Obviously we'd need to transfer some kit from the old engine to the new, but I ask because I may be able to get hold of a volvo unit at a lesser cost. Many thanks, james

The engine in your car is Volvo's RNCT made specifically to fit in the smaller, now discontinued C30, C70, S40 and V50 T5s and the ST, a completely different engine to all the other Volvo 5 pots. Also fitted in the Cmax and some Mondeos.

In the Volvos you had a different engine wiring loom to the ST but the same Bosch ME9 ECU. ST used fixed fuel pressure, Volvo variable.

So an engine out of any of those small T5s or an ST will do.

Don.

2 grand for a brand new engine? That seems like a bargain to me - once you've bought and fitted a used one with minimal gurantee you'll be up to half that price already
