We have had our 2003 XC90 since 2006 and its getting a bit tired now so time for something else, it has a full history and done 82000 miles, DSE model in gold, it has a few scars around it but nothing much - no more than any normal car that's been submitted to 4 kids over 9 years!

We are looking at around a 2008/2009 LWB Shogan around 13K

Any ideas what kind of trade in we could be looking at on the XC, I'm thinking about 4K?

Apart from the higher tax bracket for the shogun I can find very little bad news about them, any one have real life views?

The boss would like an X5 but not at 25 grand plus for a decent one!

We want the 7 seat thing but not a people carrier

We have an 04 XC90 on 130k at the moment. Looked at replacing it but can't find much else that has the do all capability of the Volvo.

Even looked at a newer XC but seemed a bit pointless spending an extra 10k just for a newer plate and less miles.

Qashqai and Santa Fe both come with 7 seats as alternatives - not sure they are as robust as the volvo or shogun but probably cheaper in comparison

I would try a cheeky ebay ad if you can before px'ing as the XC seems to hold its value well and having sub 100k miles would be a good selling point

Thanks Mattman, my thinking is not that far from yours I have to say, my V70 came back with a new MOT yesterday so thats me for another year at least but the boss wants a new car and to be fair she will be paying for it, I to have said a how about a newer XC is the place to go but 10 grand and the same car on the drive just does not sit right with me.

We have had a couple of big bills over the last couple of years so its time to go before the next MOT at the end of March me thinks!

It would be worth spending £40 or so getting a pre MOT check done on it. If it will pass with no expense or whatever your idea of cheap is, get the man to write ticket. If not, well, that's for the new owner to sort out.

At the 13 year old car end of the market, an MOT certainly counts for disproportionately more than it does with a newer car.

Prepare to be pleasantly surprised at how well these keep their value. Even tired very early 03/04 cars go for far more than I'd consider paying, and people will pay for the low mileage too. Check out autotrader for similar cars.
