Just getting used to my S60 and messing with the controls :-)

When I press the defrost button (next to the heated rear window button), flaps can be heard and then the fan is activated along with the aircon directing air up to the screen.

Thing is, its not frantic fast compared to other cars I've had - is this normal?

Also, the climate control seems very docile, in the Omega CDX I had once, the climate control would go hell for leather initially and then slow down as the required temperature was met - particularly when cooling.

Not sure I'm impressed yet with the Volvo - it doesn't seem to do anything - perhaps that's a good sign of a good system - dunno?

What are your experiences with the Volvo system?

Cheers !

Perfectly normal operation from the sounds of it. The windscreen vents have diffusers which deliberately stop a gale bouncing off the glass and potentially making your eyes water when you're trying to drive.

It won't go mad trying to cool the car either as it has the potential to over cool the cabin before the sensor has a chance to level it off (there's vents in the back of the car, if the front vents are closed, it could turn the back into a fridge before the sensor (in the dash) sees how cold it is.

It's Volvo - it'll do everything calmly and safely.

A good system never blows a gale, it diffuses the air gently through the car to avoid draughts and hot/cold spots. You wouldn't expect a system in a General Motors car to be a good one.

You can test the motor output power by manually directing all the air to your face and turning the fan up to max.

I've found the system in my Volvos to be really very good but subtle in it's operation. As you say it doesn't just go crazy blowing air on the windscreen, it sets it at a reasonable rate just after startup when the electrical heater is the only thing providing any heat and then ramps up the speed as the engine coolant warms up.

That sounds like a bit of fun to me alongside making the passengers at the back bend their necks forward if you have that option. biggrin

Thanks folks, yes it does seem to be behaving as you all suggest - has put my mind at rest.

Did I read correctly above, that the D5 has an electric heater assist for the cabin until the engine warms up?

I believe so. Even the smaller platform cars (V50/S40/C30/C70) have it too, my C70 certainly does.

Interesting I should find this as I've noticed that my defrost function defrost the left hand side of the screen way before the right.

Is this normal?

I must admit mine sounds a bit galeforce when whacked all the way round.

Think mine might be broken though.

didnt know that. Will have to check tomorrow. I always turn the fans right down till i reckon the engine has some warmth to give then put it on Auto.
