Ive just purchased a brand new, V40 D2 r design, in passion red.
I love everything about the car, but dont seem to be getting anywhere near the real world mpg i was expecting....

Official figures given as something ridiculous, like 83mpg, i was expecting it to return around 60mpg, im getting closer to 40

I have only covered 350 miles, so far, but havng never owned a brand new car before, was wondering if this is likely to increase after the car 'loosens off' a bit?

I appreciate driving style has a lot to do with it, and i do tend to have a slightly heavy right foot, but i have been trying to be mechanically sympathetic and ease the car in.

Anyone any experience of consumption improving with more miles under the belt?

Welcome!

I have a V40 D2 (2013) and I've never had anything like 40mpg, even when running in. I've had 70+ (I think 75) on a run but if I take it easy then I can 60 day-to-day. It currently reads 56 since last reset but I've driven it a bit hard recently. Mine does mainly motorway/A road miles and not much town driving.

I did increase from when it was new mind but as I say, never as low as 40.

Thanks Trevor, for the welcome and the reply...

I am mainly doing short town runs (10 miles each way to work), with a couple of miles of motorway/dual carriageway.

I'm coming from a 2011 Astra J 1.6 petrol, so REALLY enjoying the increase in torque! But i didnt think i would be getting this poor a return even given my small outbursts of spirited driving.

I'll keep an eye on it though, maybe after a couple of thousand miles if its not improved much i'll check back with dealer.

Cheers

I have a 2014 model D2 R-design, also in passion Red!. Done nearly 15000 miles in it now, and have taken it to Germany once, 2600 miles in 10 days, where I got exactly 60mpg on the trip. Daily commute is about 16 miles, and I'm getting about 48. On a run I get 58-65 driving gently, even using cruise control. I did notice a slight increase in torque and a very slight improvement in MPG after the first service, but also noticed the cold weather drops the MPG by 2-3 MPG.Never ever had over 70, even sitting at a constant 56mph. Some claim well over 70 on a day to day basis on the V40 forum, but this is the exception.

Good taste Tiff! Its a great car, and a joy to drive. That Germany trip would have been a chore in some cars, but i'm guessing not so bad in the V40?

I tried a different route to work today, still town driving, but with less stop/start sections, so a much smoother route... My mpg was 48 this morning, and i wasn't really trying to drive sensibly so quite happy with that.

I figure i could get it close to 60mpg, if i tried, but where's the fun in that?!

It seems the V40 R-Design in Passion Red is a popular choice! I have one too with a D2 under the bonnet.

Most of my miles are on the motorway and A Roads. The average onboard trip is saying over the 8000 miles I have had it is 67.1mpg. The actual mpg based on figures when filling up is about 64mpg (I'd need to check my spreadsheet to double check the exact figure), this number should go up with the warmer weather.

On most of my motorway journeys I usually see anywhere between high 60's and mid 70's sitting at 70mph. On one occasion I did get over 80mpg which I was rather pleased with.

To think of it another way, most of the time I can pretty safely get well over 600 miles out of a tank.

Sal.

Edit: I have been thinking about this and I have a feeling that it'll be more difficult to hit the stated figures in the R-Design as opposed to the SE or ES because of the different wheels and tyres. As far as I am aware the ES and SE D2 have Eco tyres as hinted at by the eco tyre pressures stated in the handbook.

Hoping to collect my new V60 D2 R-Design this week! If you don't touch the trip computer, does the mpg display automatically adjust for every journey?

Nope, you will need to do a reset for each journey.

I've also got a D2 V40 in Passion REd!!!

just ticked over 50,000 miles in mine and averaging 56mpg

most i've seen is 72mpg on a 200 mile jaunt at 50mph

Standard bombing up and down the country at 80mph (on cruise) is average the 56mpg.

Mine's fitted with the 18x 8J alloys too so MPG will be slightly worse.

Mine's definately opened up a lot since new and feels a lot better now.
