Currently have a 2005 S60 T5 as the family car. Love it to be honest, and is plenty quick enough after a remap.
I am now just starting to think about what my options are for when it gets a bit leggy. The S60/V60 T6 look nice but I hear have a crashy ride, which really limits the appeal.
The S80 4.4 V8 had some good road tests at the time. Clearly not a sports car but comfortable, swift, big with a great noise. I can understand they are of limited appeal but they sound like a pretty good package to me.
Anyone have any insights or experience with one?

I keep looking at these as the prices come down. What puts me off is tales of 20MPG real world economy for the sake of quite a low power output and really quite middling performance. In reality I suspect a well fettled S60 T5 would be every bit as quick. I suspect it's an itch I will scratch when they get down to £4k for a nice one.

Reports from the USA where they are much more common is that they are reliable and largely trouble free though!

The V8 engine is pretty much bomb proof, if you don't do many miles they are a great car however if you do and you get a fuel card through work they are also a great car.

I had one for a month as a company car back in 2007 and it genuinely did average 18mpg, my Monaro VXR with a supercharger was vastly more economical in comparison.

But they are a great all round car, if you can live with the economy.

Blimey, 18mpg! That is really poor. Making me think about that. I can get 35mpg on a run and I have 310bhp when I want some fun. Doubling my fuel bills just isn't something I could live with. The V8 isn't stacking up so well...but I do love the noise.

That's why I hadn't bought one. There was a later T6 version of the S80 but I think they sold literally single digit numbers of this in the UK.

Worth looking what the 2.5T petrol engine remaps to? I think it was only 200bhp as stock but if it is exactly the same as the 2.5T used in the S40/V50/C30 range then that was 230bhp stock and even Polestar will get 260bhp from it. An MTE or RICA map could make that quite a brisk car and they are thoroughly unloved so a great bargain.

ETA - This has inspired me into considering a 2.5T S80, I think I will e-mail Don Norchi and find out what MTE can do hehe

Polestar say 250bhp so you can consider that the lower limit of what's possible!
