Have just found out that the rumbling/droning noise I could hear is not a wheel bearing, but in fact the rear diff. It'll need replacing in the next 10,000km or so. Bit of an arse as its only done 130,000km in its 8 years, but I'm sure I read that the AWD system in these cars are known to be built by Cadbury.

So, couple of questions for those more knowledgeable in these matters than me - which'll be most of you. Is the rear diff known for wearing out, and wearing out so early? And where in the world was the V70 T6 sold?

This last question will help me find a replacement - I've sourced a local item, but its AU$1600 - I was hoping to do better than that, including sea freight. I know there are a few in the UK - any breakers worth contacting? The US had an XC70 T6, but that has a lower final drive ratio. Google is currently not my friend.

Rare as hens teeth in the UK - Have you thought about having it rebuilt by a gearbox specialist?

No, and I'm not looking at the mo. Oddly, the noise has quietened down. I got a couple of other opinions, and they weren't as decisive as the first, so have left it to develop or, as seems to be the case, not.

The internet doesn't seem to be awash with tales of similar woe, though the tales are there. So, unless its lulling me into a false sense of security and is secretly planning a raid on my wallet of Brinks Mat proportions, I've got better things to spend my money on right now.
