I have a 2004 V50 2.0d with 74K on the clock, it has been well looked after, never had any issues with it till this evening.

Went to start it, there was a horrible grinding noise for about 5 seconds then nothing. All I get is a clicking when I try and start and an intermittent Power Steering Fault.

Car is in daily use, doing 400ish miles a week and serviced as per the manufactures schedule.

I'll need to get it to the garage tomorrow to investigate, but has the PH masses any guesses on what has failed dramatically?

I'm guessing either the starter motor has seized or worse the Duel Mass Flywheel.

Did the car turn over? Why not try and bump start the car - if the Starter is seized, this may un-seize it. If the car starts, suggests starter as well.

If the starter is seized, you may not even need to fully bump it. Just get a small amount of momentum and bump in 1st if slow, 2nd if faster and see what happens. It should unseize hopefully...

The starter is designed to power up, engage, spin the engine over, power down, un-engage. The grinding you heard could have been the starter engaging, getting stuck and then burning out the motor/solenoid leaving it dead (either engaged or unengaged).
